Loussia sets program record as Volleyball Sweeps Saint Peter's

Senior outside hitter Ella Loussia made history for service aces in a single season as Canisius defeated Saint Peter's, 3-0, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference volleyball action Sunday at the Yanitelli Center in Jersey City, N.J.

The Golden Griffins won the match by scores of 25-18, 25-14, 25-17. With the victory, the Golden Griffins record shifted to 12-13 overall and 10-6 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play while the Peacocks record moved to 1-28 on the season and 1-15 in league action.

The Griffs offense got started early, going on a 6-1 run started by kills from outside hitters Loussia and Taylor Baldwin. Comfortably ahead by five, the Blue and Gold kept the Peacocks at bay for the rest of set, claiming a 25-17 victory and a 1-0 match lead. Loussia paced the Griffs in the first set with five kills of her own, including the set-winning kill.

History was made in the second set as Loussia scored back-to-back service aces to pass her former teammate Hannah Nelson for first place in program history for service aces in a single season with 58. Later in the frame, the Griffs erupted for an 11-1 spurt, led by four service aces from Loussia, to close the set, 25-14, and take a 2-0 match lead.

The third set was a back-and-forth affair with Canisius leading by one, 15-14, at the media timeout. After returning from break, the Griffs pulled away from the Peacocks, scoring seven of the next eight points, to widen their lead to 22-15. After a brief push from Saint Peter's, it was the record-breaking Loussia who closed the match out with her sixth service ace of the afternoon to seal the 25-18 set victory and 3-0 match victory.

Loussia posted her second straight double double with 11 kills and 14 digs while sophomore middle blocker Emma Mans led the match with 13 kills. At the net, junior right side Alexa Albinson registered two solo blocks with senior middle hitter Camille Vanleer added a solo block of her own.

Elena Blitzhart paced the Peacocks with eight kills while Lilian Konrad added 21 assists of her own. As a team, Saint Peter's posted a hitting percentage of .221 (30-11-86).
