Volleyball Sweeps Siena in Crucial MAAC Match

Sophomore outside hitter Taylor Baldwin led the offensive charge for the Golden Griffins with 15 kills, as Canisius defeated Siena 3-0 in MAAC volleyball action Saturday at the Koessler Athletic Center. With the win, Canisius improves to 13-13 overall and 11-6 in MAAC play, while Siena falls to 12-15 overall and 10-7 in MAAC action. With the victory, the Griffs can finish no lower than fourth in the MAAC standings head to next week's postseason tournament in Florida.
 
The Griffs dominated the first set offensively, using multiple long runs, including a 7-1 spurt to start the match, spearheaded by a bundle of kills by Baldwin and sophomore middle blocker Emma Mans, to close out the first set 25-14 and take a 1-0 match lead. The Blue and Gold posted a hitting percentage of .156, compared to the Saints' -.111.
 
Senior libero Bree Long opened the second set with her longest service run of the season, fueling an 11-0 run to start the frame. During the run, Long picked up a service ace, while Baldwin added in three kills. Siena could not muster a response midway through the set, with the Griffs ending the second set on a 7-2 run to take the set 25-11 and a 2-0 match lead.
 
Tied 8-8 early in the third set, the Griffs got hot, igniting a 6-0 run with sophomore outside hitter Kara Zaucha on the service line to take a 19-10 lead and put the Saints on the brink of defeat. Siena would respond with a run of their own, but the Griffs sealed the 25-16 set victory with a short 4-1 scoring surge, led two kills from senior Ella Loussia to win the match 3-0.
 
Baldwin paced the Griffs with 15 kills, with Loussia chipping in five kills and 11 digs. Long had 22 digs in the contest, while freshman setter Ella Bourque continued her strong rookie campaign with 30 assists. As a team, the Griffs hit at a clip of .236 (35-10-106).
 
For Siena, Hailey Hinkel led the way for the Saints with six kills, and her teammate, Meghan Johnsson, added ten assists. As a team, the Saints finished with a negative hitting percentage of -.027 (20-23-112) for the contest.
 
Match Notes
  • This is the first time since Mar. 7, 2021 that the Blue and Gold have swept Siena. Their victory today also extends their home winning streak against Siena to four. 
  • The Griffs improve to 9-1 when they have more digs than their opponent. Today, Canisius had 60 digs compared to 52 from Siena
  • With her 30 assists in the contest, it is the 15th MAAC match this season where Bourque has had over 30 assists in the contest.
  • Five different Griffs had at least one block assist in the contest with junior right side Alexa Albinson, Mans and Loussia having one, while Baldwin and senior Elle Shult recording two.

The Griffs will close out the 2022 regular season on Sunday noon when the team takes on Marist on Senior Day. The match will be broadcast live on the Golden Griffin Broadcast Network.
