Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Buffalo Outruns Men’s Basketball, 86-66

Buffalo's Curtis Jones scored a game-high 22 points and three other Bulls posted double-digits in the scoring column as Buffalo defeated Canisius 86-66 in men's college basketball action Sunday afternoon at Alumni Arena in Buffalo, N.Y.

The win, Buffalo's second straight, moved the Bulls to 3-4 on the season. Canisius fell to 2-4 with its second-straight loss.

Canisius graduate student Jamir Moultrie scored a team-high 17 points in the loss for the Blue and Gold, while redshirt-freshman Tahj Staveskie added nine points and seven rebounds. Graduate student Jordan Henderson scored nine points and sophomore Xzavier Long added eight points, seven boards and two blocked shots in the losing effort for the Griffs, who ended the night shooting 33.3 percent (24-for-72) from the field and 22.2 percent (8-for-36) from 3-point land.

Canisius trailed 16-14 9:51 into the game before Staveskie ripped off seven-straight points, capped by a 3-pointer with 9:17 left in the opening half, to put the Blue and Gold up 21-16. That trey by Staveskie forced Buffalo to call a timeout, and out of that stoppage, the Bulls ripped off a 21-2 run over the next 7:14 to take a 37-23 lead. In that surge, Buffalo's LaQuill Hardnett had seven points for the home team, helping send the Bulls into the locker room up 39-27 at the break.

In the second half, Canisius cut Buffalo's lead to nine points at 50-41 with 14:11 left in the game after Henderson drove to the basket for two of his nine points on the night. But that would be as close as the Blue and Gold would come the rest of the way, as Buffalo used an 8-1 run over the next 49 seconds, fueled by a pair of 3-point makes by Jones.

The Bulls out-rebounded Canisius by a 44-43 count, with Canisius grabbing 21 offensive rebounds, and UB was credited with 19 assists on 32-made field goals, as the home team ended the contest shooting 48.5 percent (32-for-66) from the floor, 37.5 percent (6-for-16) from 3-point land and 76.2 percent (16-for-21) from the free-throw line.

HEAD COACH REGGIE WITHERSPOON'S POSTGAME COMMENTS
"Our opponent today played much harder than we did. We did not have enough intensity to compete today. We turned the ball over way too much and we did not defend with any force. We didn't do too many things right today, and they took advantage of that."

GAME NOTES
• This was the 54th all-time meeting between these two programs in a series Canisius leads 33-21.
