Hockey Rallies for 2-2 Tie Against Army, Earns Extra Point in Shootout

Canisius scored twice in the third period to rally from a two-goal deficit and record a 2-2 tie against Army in Atlantic Hockey Association action Friday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Senior Daniel DiGrande and graduate student Grant Loven both found the back of the net in the third period for the Golden Griffins (4-8-2, 2-3-2 AHA), who picked up the extra point as they won the best-of-three shootout, 2-0, on goals from junior Max Kousnetsov and senior Hudson Lambert. Senior goaltender John Hawthorne finished with 19 saves as he made his fifth start of the season.

Max Itagaki and Jake Felker scored for the Black Knights (3-7-2, 2-3-1 AHA). Justin Evenson made 23 saves in goal for the visitors.

Itagaki opened the scoring at the 12:13 mark of the first period with a power-play goal, sneaking a wrist shot under the right arm of Hawthorne from the right face-off circle.

Felker doubled the Black Knights advantage to 2-0 just past the midway point of the contest, taking advantage of a Canisius turnover deep in the Griffs zone and chipping a shot over the right shoulder of Hawthorne for his third of the campaign.

DiGrande got Canisius on the board 3:16 into the third period when he fired a shot from the slot that Evenson got a piece of, but was unable to keep from crossing the goal line, to make it a 2-1 game.

Loven tied the contest with 12:29 elapsed in the third as he netted a power-play tally by re-directing senior Keaton Mastrodonato's centering feed past Everson for his first goal in a Canisius uniform. The game would head to overtime and after neither team was able to score during the five-minute overtime session, a shootout. Kouznetsov and Lambert helped the Griffs secure the shootout win as both players were able to put their shots between the legs of Everson to give Canisius the extra point.
