Hockey Closes Homestand with Setback to Army

Army scored twice in a 60-second span to break open a scoreless contest on its way to a 3-1 victory over Canisius in Atlantic Hockey Association action Saturday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Joey Baez, Noah Wilson and John Keranen all scored for the Black Knights (4-7-2, 3-3-1 AHA) while Gavin Abric stopped 28-of-29 shots faced.

Freshman Stefano Bottini scored his first collegiate goal to account for the Golden Griffins (4-9-2, 2-4-2 AHA) lone tally on Saturday. Senior goaltender John Hawthorne made 25 saves in goal for Canisius.

Baez gave Army a 1-0 lead with just 15 seconds to play in the first period, capitalizing on a breakaway opportunity for his seventh goal of the season.

Wilson doubled the Black Knights cushion in the opening minute of the second period, using a pass from Kendrick Frost to get behind the Canisius defense before beating Hawthorne with a shot over the right shoulder to make it a 2-0 game.

Bottini cut the Canisius deficit in half at the 8:14 mark of the second, stuffing home a loose puck from the top of the crease after graduate student J.D. Pogue's initial attempt was turned aside.
The Griffs pressed for the equalizer in the third, but were unable to put one past Abric. Keranen closed out the scoring with 30 seconds remaining when he found the empty net to give the Black Knights the two-goal victory.
