Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Downs Colgate in Wire-to-Wire Victory

Junior guard Dani Haskell poured in a season-high 20 points and freshman forward Sisi Eleko chipped in 12 as Canisius defeated Colgate, 64-58, in collegiate women's basketball action Tuesday at Cotterill Court in Hamilton, N.Y.

Leading the charge offensively for the Golden Griffins (2-3) was Haskell, who notched ten of her 20 points in the first quarter, while Eleko made her first six shots of the contest on her way to double figures for the third time in her young career. On the glass, guards Vannessa Garrelts and Athina Lexa each were tied for the team lead in rebounds with seven. Garrelts was also distributing the ball as well, totaling six assists in the contest to match her career high in that category.

Taylor Golembiewski had a team-best 18 points for the Raiders (3-2) with her teammate Morgan McMahon right behind with 16. Tiasia McMillian collected six rebounds during the contest. As a team, Colgate only shot 18-of-52 (.346) from the floor, including a 5-of-18 (.278) from beyond the arc.

The Griffs had their best quarter of the season in first, limiting Colgate to just eight points as they raced out to a 19-8 advantage. Canisius opened the game riding an 8-0 run, with four different members of the Blue and Gold registering a basket. Ahead 17-8 with only 2.9 seconds left in the quarter, Haskell corralled up a loose ball off the inbound and floated a shot into the hoop, giving the Griffs a ten-point edge heading into the second quarter.

The Raiders opened the second quarter on a 13-2 run to tie the game 21-all. Each side would continue exchange baskets until the end of the quarter with Lexa finding a small pocket of space at the free-throw line to bury a jumper as time expired to give Canisius as 30-27 lead at the half.

Out of the break, Canisius and Colgate would go basket-for-basket in the first few minutes before consecutive baskets by Eleko gave Canisius a 40-34 cushion halfway through the quarter. Even with a late 9-4 run by the Raiders, Canisius used a late bucket by freshman forward Chloe Chard Peloquin to carry a slim 46-43 lead entering the fourth quarter.

The teams traded baskets early in the fourth quarter before a layup by Sisko ignited a 7-3 stretch that gave Canisius an eight-point cushion, 60-52, with just over four minutes remaining.

The Raiders were able to answer, using six unanswered points to cut the Griffs lead to two with 1:47 to go in regulation. The teams traded empty possessions over the next 90 seconds before Lexa received a pass from sophomore guard Elia Paez and converted on a backdoor layup to expand the Canisius lead to 62-58 with 15 seconds to play. Two late makes from the charity stripe, courtesy of Chard Peloquin, locked up the Griffs' six-point victory.
