Women's Basketball Falls Short at Robert Morris

Canisius used an early fourth-quarter rally to get within one of Robert Morris, but eventually fell in a 62-52 setback Saturday afternoon in collegiate women's basketball action at the UMPC Events Center in Moon Township, Pa.

Danielle Vuletich led three Colonials (5-1) in double figures with 14 points on 4-6 shooting. Mackenzie Amalia added 11 points while Phoenix Gedeon chipped in 10. Simone Morris collected a game-high 11 rebounds while Gedeon pitched in nine as Robert Morris held a 49-39 advantage on the glass.  
 
The Golden Griffins (2-4) were led by freshman forward Brooklyn Thrash who had 12 points in the contest. Sophomore guard Cheyenne Stubbs, making her first appearance of the season, chipped in 10 points in 25 minutes of action. Graduate student guard Vannessa Garrelts collected a career-high ten rebounds and added seven points and four assists.
  
Robert Morris took control in the first quarter, going 6-of-16 (.375) from the field compared to just 2-of-15 (.133) from the floor for the Griffs to hold a 16-8 edge. The Blue and Gold were unable to take advantage of a 13-10 edge on the glass during the opening quarter that featured six offensive rebounds.
 
The Colonials built upon their lead in the early stages of the second quarter, extending their lead to as much as 14 with 5:26 to go in the half. The Griffs were able to begin clawing back as an 11-1 run, sparked by back-to-back baskets from sophomore guard Èlia Páez, made it a 26-22 contest with 3:03 left in the half.
 
Robert Morris was able to find an answer, scoring the final nine points of the first half, capped by a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from Mackenzie Amalia, to hold a 35-22 advantage at the break.
 
Canisius started to make its way back into the contest late in the third quarter, as a pair of free throws by Thrash ignited a 9-3 run during the final 3:39 of the frame to cut the Griffs' deficit to eight, 43-36.
 
Canisius carried its momentum from the third quarter into the fourth, hitting three of its first four shots of the stanza, highlighted by  a corner 3-pointer from Stubbs, to cut the Colonials lead to one, 45-44.
 
Robert Morris responded with an 11-0 run of their own over the next two minutes to extend their lead to 56-44 with 4:25 remaining. Stubbs and sophomore Chloe Chard Peloquin kickstarted a short 6-0 spurt at the 3:44 mark of the fourth quarter, but late game free-throws sealed the 10-point victory for Robert Morris.

Game Notes

• Saturday's game served as the first meeting between Canisius and Robert Morris in Moon Township, Pa., since the 1986-87 season.
• Canisius made just 18-of-62 attempts (.290) from the floor for the contest while Robert Morris was just 18-of-56 (.321) for the game.
• The teams were a combined 10-of-44 from 3-point range in the game (Canisius: 6-of-29; Robert Morris (4-of-15)
• This was McCauley's first career start in her collegiate career.
• Páez set a new career high in points (4) and minutes played (17) during the contest.
• This is the first time this season that Thrash finished the game as the leading scorer for the Griffs.
