This Week in Canisius Athletics: Nov. 22-28

A pair of home contests for hockey, along with road contests against regional opponents for both men's and women's basketball, are just some of the things that we are thankful for This Week in Canisius Athletics.

• The hockey team closes out its November homestand with a Thanksgiving Weekend series against Atlantic Hockey Association foe Army. Puck drop for both games of the Nov. 25-26 series at LECOM Harborcenter are slated for 1 p.m. Tickets are on sale now by calling the Canisius ticket office at (716) 888-TIXX, or online at GoGriffs.com.
• Canisius returns to action for the first time after recording a sweep of defending AHA regular season and tournament champion AIC Nov. 11-12 at LECOM Harborcenter.  
• With his three points in the series opener in the series opener against AIC, senior forward Keaton Mastrodonato (3g, 7a) moved into a tie with Nick Bowman (6g, 4a) for first place on the team's scoring chart with 10 points. Bowman, meanwhile, picked up his team-leading sixth goal of the season with a power-play tally in the series finale against the Yellow Jackets.
• Senior goaltender Jacob Barczewski became just seventh goaltender in program history with 2,000 or more career saves to their credit as he reached the milestone during the Griffs series finale against AIC on Nov. 12. The O'Fallon, Mo., native currently sits just 72 saves away from matching Derek Slater (1991-95) for fifth place on the all-time saves list (2,100).
• Canisius opens December with a home-and-home series against longtime rival RIT. The series begins Dec. 2 at the Gene Polisseni Center in Rochester before shifting to Buffalo for the series finale the following day. Start time fo both contests is slated for 7 p.m.

• The men's basketball team starts a seven-game road swing this week with a pair of games against in-state rivals. The Griffs travel to Cornell Tuesday for a 5 p.m. contest before returning to Buffalo for a 2:30 p.m. contest against the crosstown rival Bulls Sunday at Alumni Arena.
• Canisius closed out its season-opening homestand last week with a split of its games.  The Griffs fell in a 58-57 overtime setback to Cleveland State on Nov. 16 before rebounding with a 98-52 victory against Fredonia on Nov. 20.  
• Redshirt-freshman Tahj Staveskie earned his second-straight Hercules Tires MAAC Rookie of the Week award after he averaged 14.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 3.5 steals per game last week. Staveskie shot a combined 47.8 percent (11-for-23) from the floor and 40.0 percent (4-for-10) from behind the arc in the contests against the Vikings and Blue Devils.
• In the win against Fredonia, junior Siem Uijtendaal set a school record with 10 3-point field goals, eight of which he drained in the game's first 20 minutes. He ended the night with a career-high 30 points, making him the first Griff to score 30-or more points in a home game since Jermaine Crumpton had 32 points against Niagara at the Koessler Athletic Center on Jan. 27, 2018.
• Canisius opens MAAC play next week with road games at Siena (Dec. 2) and Iona (Dec. 4)

• The women's basketball team heads on the road for the second time this season to take on Colgate on Nov. 22 at 2 p.m. and Robert Morris on Nov. 26 at 1 p.m. Both games will stream on ESPN+.
• Freshman guard Brooklyn Thrash became the first Canisius freshman to record a double-double since former Griff AJ Timbers has 16 points and 11 boards against Siena on March 10, 2020. Thrash had 16 points and 10 rebounds against Binghamton on Nov. 20. 
• Canisius and Robert Morris will meet for just the second time ever in Moon Township, Pa. when the sides square off on Saturday. The last time Canisius and Robert Morris played in Moon Township, Pa., was on Dec. 2, 1986. 
• Last season against Colgate, head coach Sahar Nusseibeh picked up her first career win with a 61-58 victory in Buffalo. Former Griff Shaunae Brown hit the game-winning shot with less than 13 seconds to go in the contest. 
• The Griffs return home on Nov. 30 to take on UAlbany with tip-off set for 7 p.m. and the game streaming on ESPN+.
