Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball Falls to Binghamton at Home

Binghamton closed out the contest on a 7-1 run to erase a three-point deficit and defeat Canisius, 75-72, in collegiate women's basketball action Sunday at the Koessler Athletic Center in Buffalo. N.Y.

Ella Wanzer led four Bearcats (4-1) in double figures as she recorded a game-high 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting, highlighted by a 5-of-8 effort from 3-point range. Denai Bowman chipped in 16 points, Clare Traeger pitched in 12 and and Genevieve Coleman added 10. Traeger also collected 10 rebounds to finish with a double-double.

Freshman Brooklyn Thrash recorded her first career double-double, posting season highs of 16 points and 10 rebounds to pace the Golden Griffins (1-3). Fellow newcomer Sisi Eleko joined Trash in double figures with a team-high 17 points, while junior Dani Haskell chipped in 13 to give Canisius three double-digit scorers on the afternoon.

In a back-and-forth affair that featured a total of 10 ties and 16 lead changes, Canisius held a 71-68 advantage with under four minutes remaining in the fourth quarter when Camryn Fauria hit a jumper from the top of the key to pull Binghamton within one.

The Bearcats took the lead moments later on a step-back jumper from Bowman and added to their lead less than a minute later when Bowman split a pair of free-throw attempts, giving Binghamton a 73-71 edge with 1:57 remaining.

The Griffs got back within one with a little more than a minute to play after Eleko went 1-for-2 at the free-throw line. Canisius had a chance to take the lead in the final eight seconds, as senior guard Vannessa Garrelts was sent to the line.

Garrelts was unable to hit on either attempt at the line, and the Bearcats were able to secure the rebound, forcing the Griffs to foul. Bowman knocked down a pair of free throws with six seconds left on the clock, giving the visiting team a three-point cushion. Haskell's last-second, game-tying 3-point field goal attempt was blocked at the buzzer, helping Binghamton perserve the victory.

Earlier in the contest, the Bearcats jumped to an 8-2 lead only to see the Griffs respond with a 7-0 run of their own to take their first lead of the game, 9-8. Each side would exchange baskets until the first-quarter buzzer with senior guard Jane McCauley hitting a layup as the first-quarter horn sounded to keep the score knotted 15-15 after 10:00.

Canisius opened the second-quarter scoring on a basket by sophomore Lydia Gattozzi, but a 9-2 Binghamton run, propelled by four points from Coleman, allowed the Bearcats to take 24-19 lead halfway through the frame. The Bearcats took a 36-34 advantage into the halftime break.

Neither team skipped a beat during the third quarter, with each side scoring 25 points during the frame. Garrelts contributed five points, all from the free-throw line for Canisius, while Thrash had a quarter-leading six points after scoring three layups.

Trailing 61-59 heading into the fourth quarter, Canisius out-scored Binghamton by a 12-7 margin over the opening 5:51 of the stanza, setting the stage for the Bearcats' late-game surge.
