Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Comeback Falls Short

Canisius redshirt-freshman Tahj Staveskie scored a team-high 14 points, while graduate student Jamir Moultrie and senior Jacco Fritz added nine points apiece, but it was not enough to help lift the Golden Griffins to a victory as the Blue and Gold fell in overtime to Cleveland State 58-57 Wednesday night at the Koessler Athletic Center. The win improves the Vikings to 1-3 on the season, while the Griffs slipped to 1-2 with the loss.

Four Cleveland State players scored in double-figures in the victory, led by junior Tristan Enaruna, who posted a game-high 15 points to go with 10 rebounds. Senior Deshon Parker added 12 points and six assists in the victory, as the Vikings ended the night shooting 49.1 percent from the field, despite going 0-for-5 from 3-point land.

Canisius trailed by as many as 14 points with 12:21 left in regulation, but eventually took a 48-47 lead thanks to a 17-4 run over the span of 6:55. In that run, Moultrie scored six points for the Griffs with a pair of 3-pointers, and Fritz added five points, including a traditional three-point play with 6:26 left on the clock to cut the Vikings' lead to three at 47-44. The Griffs took a 48-47 lead with 5:03 left in regulation time after sophomore Tre Dinkins knocked down a 3-pointer from the right wing. That lead was short-lived, however, as Cleveland State scored the game's next six points to take a 53-48 lead with 3:07 left on the clock.

Canisius answered with five-straight points, capped by a 3-pointer by Staveskie with 2:32 left in regulation time, to knot the game at 53-53. Neither team would score down the stretch, sending the contest into overtime, the Griffs' second overtime game in five days.

In the overtime period, Enaruna put the Vikings up 58-55 with 1:47 left on the clock with a driving lay-up, but Canisius answered with a jump-hook bucket by Fritz with 52 seconds remaining to make the score 58-57. With 8.2 seconds left, Cleveland State missed the front-end of a one-and-one, allowing the Griffs a chance to win, but a late jump shot with less than five seconds remaining in the overtime period banged off the iron and the final horn sounded, sending Cleveland State home with the victory.

Dinkins and junior Bryce Okpoh ended the night with seven points each for the Griffs, who shot 36.2 percent from the field and just 19.0 percent from 3-point land after going 4-for-21 from behind the arc. Sophomore Xzavier Long grabbed a career-high 12 rebounds in the losing effort for Canisius, which out-rebounded the Vikings by a 33-31 count for the game.
