Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Three-Ball Helps Men’s Basketball Cruise Past Fredonia

The Canisius men's basketball team made a school-record 20 3-point field goals, the most 3-pointers in a game by a MAAC school since 2014-15 and the Golden Griffins' defense forced 21 turnovers en route to a 98-52 win over Fredonia Sunday evening at the Koessler Athletic Center.

In the win, Canisius junior Siem Uijtendaal set a school record with 10 3-point field goals, eight of which he drained in the game's first 20 minutes. He ended the night with a career-high 30 points, making him the first Griff to score 30-or more points in a home game since Jermaine Crumpton had 32 points against Niagara at the Koessler Athletic Center on Jan. 27, 2018. Uijtendaal is the first player at the Division I level to make more than eight 3-pointers in a game this season, and his 10 makes from behind the arc are the most for a MAAC player since Iona's A.J. English made 13 treys against Fairfield on Dec. 1, 2015.

Redshirt-freshman Tahj Staveskie scored 15 points to go with four assists and four steals, while graduate student Jamir Moultrie added 12 points and three assists to the winning effort for the Blue and Gold, which improved to 2-2 on the year with the victory. In all, Canisius was credited with 26 assists on 34-made field goals on the night, led by senior Jacco Fritz, who ended the night with five assists to match a career-high.

Early on, Fredonia (0-5) hung tough with the Griffs, trailing just 17-14 with 9:17 left before halftime after Aaron Collins hit a 3-pointer from the left wing for three of his team-high 13 points. But from there, the Griffs took over thanks to a 41-9 run over the closing 8:49 of the opening half. In that run, which was started by five-straight points by Staveskie, Uijtendaal hit six triples as the home team went into the locker room at intermission up 58-23.

In the second half, Uijtendaal matched the school record with his ninth make from behind the arc with 9:10 left on the clock, and 1:55 seconds later, he broke the school's record for 3-pointers in a game with his 10th trey of the contest off a pass from freshman Devean Williams, who tallied four assists in his first collegiate action. Eleven of the 13 Griffs in uniform scored at least two points in the win and all 13 players had at least one rebound, led by junior Bryce Okpoh, who grabbed a game-high nine boards off the bench in 14:24 of game action.

Collins led the way for Fredonia with his 13 points, while Jacob Hougan added 10 points and five rebounds to the Blue Devils' cause. Fredonia shot 36.4 percent from the field in the loss and turned the ball over 21 times, which Canisius turned into 30 points. The Griffs shot 50.0 percent (34-for-68) from the field in the victory, highlighted by a 57.1 percent (20-for-35) effort from 3-point land.
