Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball has Late Comeback Stopped by Detroit Mercy

A late surge in the fourth quarter was not enough as Canisius suffered a 70-65 setback at Detroit Mercy in collegiate women's basketball action Sunday at Calihan Hall.

The Golden Griffins fell to 1-2 on the young season with the road loss while the Titans picked up their first win of the year to move to 1-2.

Trailing 61-41 with six minutes to play in the fourth quarter, the Griffs attempted to mount a comeback, rattling off 10 unanswered points over a three-minute span to trim the deficit in half. Guards Jane McCauley and Vannessa Garrelts each had a 3-pointer during the stretch with junior Dani Haskell adding in three points of her own.

After a pair of Titans free throws temporarily halted the Canisius surge, the Griffs continued to chip away at the Detroit Mercy lead, tallying 11 of the next 14 points to make it a four-point game with 17 seconds remaining.

The Titans gained some more breathing room with a pair of free throws by Imani McNeal, but a conventional three-point play from Haskell on Canisius' next possession made it a three-point game with seven seconds to go.

Detroit Mercy was able to hang on, as a pair of free throws Myonna Hooper with three seconds to play determined the final margin.

The first and third quarters belonged to the Titans as they out-scored the Griffs by a combined total of 47-18 over the two frames. The Titans limited the Griffs to just 6-of-30 shooting from the field in both quarters.

The Griffs found a spark early early in the second quarter, embarking on a 10-0 run that was capped by 3-pointers from Garrelts and forward Brooklyn Thrash, to cut their deficit to 25-19. Canisius would get to within three of the Titans before the end of the half as Garrelts banked a layup off the glass in the final seconds to make it a 31-28 contest at the break.

Garrelts and Haskell led the way for the Griffs with 18 points each while Garrelts also chipped in five steals and four assists. Freshman forward Chloe Chard Peloquin grabbed a team-best seven rebounds before fouling out.

For the Titans, four different scorers hit double digits with Irene Murua leading the charge with 16 points and 11 rebounds for a double-double. On the glass, Emma Trawally Porta corralled a game-high 13 boards for Detroit Mercy.
