Marist Spoils Volleyball Senior Day

Three Marist players recorded double-digit kills and the Red Foxes hit .271 as a team en route to a 3-0 sweep of Canisius in MAAC volleyball action Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center. Marist improved to 18-10 overall and 14-4 in league play after scoring set victories of 25-18, 25-19, 25-18.

The Golden Griffins saw their record fall to 13-14 overall and 11-7 in conference play with the loss. Canisius entered the day locked into the fourth seed at next week's MAAC Volleyball Championship tournament at the Disney Wide World of Sports Complex in Lake Buena Vista, Fla. The MAAC will announce the official tournament bracket and games times later on Sunday when the regular season is completed.

Marist's Sasha Van der Merwe led the way for the Red Foxes with 14 kills, while Gabrielle Heller added 12 kills and 15 digs to the winning effort. Jordan Newblatt chipped in 10 kills, eight digs and three service aces on the day for Marist, which snapped a three-match losing skid to Canisius at the Koessler Athletic Center with the victory.

Canisius senior Ella Loussia had a team-high nine kills to go with nine digs and two aces in the loss for the Blue and Gold, while junior Alexa Albinson added seven kills, two service aces and a block assist. Freshmen setter Ella Bourque was credited with 26 assists and six digs for the Griffs and senior libero Bree Long tallied a team-high 12 digs on the day.

Marist hit .244 as a team in the first set to score the 25-18 victory, and then took advantage of 10 combined kills from Van der Merwe, Heller and Newblatt to grab a 2-0 lead in the match after taking the second set 25-19. Out of the intermission, Canisius scored the first three points of the third frame before Marist used a 12-1 scoring run, capped kill by Heller, to take a 12-4 lead. A kill by Loussia got the Griffs within six points at 23-17 in the third set, but a Canisius service error and a final kill by Newblatt sealed the victory for the Red Foxes.

GAME NOTES
• Canisius and Marist split the regular-season series for the second-straight year. The two schools did not meet in the Spring 2021 campaign.
• The Griffs finished the home portion of their regular-season schedule with a 6-6 record, marking the fifth-straight year where the team was .500 or better in home contests.
• Louissia, who entered the day ranked fourth nationally with 64 service aces, had multiple aces in a match for the 17th time this season.
• Bourque's 26 assists on Sunday makes her just the ninth player in program history, and the first freshman, to record 1,000-or more assists in a single season. The last Griff with 1,000-plus assists in a year was former Griff setter Cassidy Ceriani, who had 1,025 assists in 2019.
• Long's 12 digs in Sunday's contest gives her 481 for the season. She needs 20 more digs to become just the second player in school history to record 500-plus digs in three different seasons.
• Prior to the match, Canisius honored its 2022 graduating class – Louissa, Elle Shult, Long, Albinson and Camile Vanleer.
