Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Men’s Basketball Beats St. Bonaventure in Overtime

Canisius graduate student Jordan Henderson scored 15 of his 19 points in the game's second half and overtime period and sophomore Xzavier Long posted a career-high 19 points as well to help lift the Golden Griffins to an 84-80 overtime victory over long-time rival St. Bonaventure Saturday night at the Koessler Athletic Center. The win moved Canisius to 1-1 on the young season, while St. Bonaventure's record moved to 1-1 as well.

Henderson's 19 points came after he went 7-for-12 from the field, 2-for-2 from 3-point land and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line to go with a team-high six assists and three rebounds. Long went 7-for-8 from the floor, including 3-for-3 performance from 3-point land, en route to his 19 points. He also grabbed five boards and recorded two steals in the victory. Senior Jacco Fritz added 12 points off the bench, while redshirt-freshman Tahj Staveskie scored 11 points, with nine of those coming in the overtime session. Graduate student Jamir Moultrie chipped in 10 points to the winning cause as the Griffs ended the night by shooting 46.4 percent from the field, 50 percent (11-for-22) from 3-point land and 65.6 percent from the charity stripe.

For the Bonnies, junior Daryl Banks III had a game-high 22 points, with nine of those coming from the free-throw line. Sophomore Kyrell Luc pitched in 13 points, nine assists and six rebounds as St. Bonaventure closed out the contest shooting 45.3 percent from the field while out-rebounding Canisius by a 39-32 clip.

Canisius trailed St. Bonaventure 65-61 with 2:14 left in regulation before Fritz cut the Bonnies' cushion to 65-63 with a pair of free-throw makes. On their next defensive possession, the Griffs forced the Bonnies into a shot-clock violation. Henderson put the Blue and Gold ahead at 66-65 moments later with a 3-pointer 48.7 seconds left on the clock. The Bonnies knotted the score at 66-66 with 26 seconds remaining after Chad Venning made 1-of-2 free-throws.

In the overtime period, Canisius scored the session's first five points after a bucket by Henderson and a trey from Long. A lay-up by Fritz with 1:49 remaining in overtime had Canisius up 76-68, but the Bonnies would not go away, as Banks hit a 3-pointer with four seconds left in overtime to make the score 80-79 in favor of the Blue and Gold. Down the stretch, Staveskie made four-straight free-throws to seal the win for Canisius, the team's first win over the Bonnies at the Koessler Athletic Center since Nov. 17, 2012.
