Volleyball Earns 3-1 Victory Over Rider

Four Canisius players recorded double-digit kills, led by sophomore Emma Mans who had a career-high 13, as the Golden Griffins scored a 3-1 home victory over Rider in MAAC volleyball action Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center. Canisius won the match by set scores of 25-18, 25-20, 24-26, 25-21.

Canisius improved to 8-9 overall and 6-2 in the MAAC with the win, the team's fourth-straight home victory. Rider fell to 4-13 overall and 2-5 in league play with its fourth-straight defeat.

Mans' career-high 13 kills came on 27 attack attempts. She also registered a career-high 10 digs as well, while also recording two service aces and three block assists. Sophomore Taylor Baldwin was good for 11 kills, while senior Elle Shult and junior Alexa Albinson added 10 kills, apiece. Shult also added a solo block and five kills to help lead the Griffs' defensive effort, as the Blue and Gold ended the contest with 15 total team blocks.

Canisius raced out to an early 2-0 lead in the match after taking the first two sets. In the opening frame, Canisius hit .423 as a team, with Mans leading the way with five kills and an ace. In the second set, which Canisius won 25-20, the Griffs hit just .097 as a team, but held the Broncs to a team-hitting percentage of .067. One day after setting a program-record for service aces in a four-set match, Canisius again used the service ace to its advantage in the second frame, racking up four aces in the session, three of which coming from senior Ella Loussia, who ended the day with a career-high six.

In the third set, Canisius led 22-20 before Rider raced back to win the frame thanks to a 6-2 run late, forcing a fourth-and-deciding set. In the final set, Canisius led Rider 22-19, but the Broncs scored back-to-back points to make it 22-21. Out of a Canisius timeout, the Blue and Gold sealed the win by scoring the day's final three points, capped by a kill from Shult.

Freshman setter Ella Bourque was credited with a match-high 38 assists in the victory, while senior libero Bree Long recorded 16 digs for the Blue and Gold. Long was one of four Canisius players to record 10-or more digs in the contest, with Loussia recording 14, her fifth match this season with double-digit digs.

Rider was led by Morgan Romano, who posted 13 kills and 13 digs in the losing effort. Rider hit .132 as a team on the day.

GAME NOTES
• The win over Rider ended the Griffs' four-match losing skid to the Broncs, which dated back to the spring 2021 campaign.
• The 13-kill effort by Mans on Sunday marks the fourth time in her career where she's recorded 10-or more kills in a match.
• One day after recording a career-high five aces, Loussia's new career-high six aces on Sunday gives her 42 for the season, which is tied for ninth on the school's single-season aces list. She is the second player in the conference this season to record six aces in a four-set match, along with Quinnipiac's Faavae Kimsel Moe.
• Shult's six total blocks in the match set a new season-high.
• Bourque's 618 assists through 17 matches are the most for a Canisius freshman setter since former Griff Cassidy Ceriani had 787 assists in her rookie campaign in 2016.
