Volleyball Serves Up a Win Over Saint Peter’s

Three Canisius players recorded double-digit kills and the Golden Griffins set a program record with 16 service aces on the day, as the Blue and Gold posted a 3-1 win over Saint Peter's in MAAC volleyball action Saturday in the Koessler Athletic Center. The Griffs improved to 7-9 overall and 5-2 in league play after winning the match by set scores of 25-14, 23-25, 25-11, 25-23.

Senior Ella Loussia led the way with a match-high 18 kills for Canisius, while junior Alexa Albinson and sophomore Kara Zaucha chipped in 13 and 11 kills, respectively. Canisius' 16 service aces in the contest are the most for the program in a four-set match, and the most for the team since the Blue and Gold recorded 16 aces in a three-set win over Saint Peter's on Oct. 22, 2006. The previous program record for service aces in a four-set match was 14, a number Canisius posted three different times, most recently on Aug. 24, 2018 against Binghamton.

In all, five different Canisius players had multiple aces on the day, led by Loussia, who was credited with a career-high five. Freshman setter Ella Bourque had three aces in the victory, while seniors Bree Long and Elle Shult and sophomore Taylor Baldwin all added two aces apiece.

The Griffs raced out to an early 1-0 lead in the match after beating Saint Peter's (0-20, 0-7 MAAC) by the score of 25-14. In the first set, Loussia led the way for the Blue and Gold with six kills and three aces. Saint Peter's evened the match at 1-1 after taking the second set by the score of 25-23. In that frame, the Peacocks hit .227 as a team, while taking advantage of 10 Canisius attack errors.

Out of the intermission, Canisius regained control of the contest thanks to a 25-11 victory in the third set. In that frame, Loussia had four kills for the home team, while Shult added three kills to the effort as well. In the final set, Canisius led 23-20 late, but Saint Peter's scored three-straight points to even the score at 23-23. However, Canisius ended the Peacocks' rally and the match moments later thanks to a Saint Peter's service error, followed by a final service ace from Loussia.

Bourque was good for a match-high 49 assists in the win for Canisius, which has now won three-straight at home, dating back to Sept. 18. Long was credited with 28 digs for Canisius, while Zaucha and freshman Alyssa Rich each recorded 10 digs in the victory. Saint Peter's, which hit .169 as a team for the match, was led by Elena Bilhartz and Morgan Thurlow and their 10 kills each.
