Rowing Earns First-Place Finish at Head of the Genesee

The Canisius rowing team began its 2022 fall campaign at the Head of the Genesee with its novice 8 squad claiming first in the program's opening event of the season.

The novice eight crew, composed of Gianna Perugini, Addie Naylor, Victoria Fitzgerald, Kaleigh Schwab, Alice Schmidt, Sophie Hartzell, Emma Giuga, Brooke Urmson and Julie Ducato won their race with a time of 20:45.803, nearly four seconds better than second-place Roberts Wesleyan and a full minute ahead of third place RIT.

"We were really happy to get out and race today for the first time this season," head coach Kerri Brace said. "We were able to build on our daily practice and see how we match up against some really good programs. We will continue to work on building speed at higher rates this week. I could not be happier for our novice 8 for winning their first race as Griffs!"

Canisius' open eight crew finished in second with a time of 18:41.170. Host Colgate finished first in that race with a time of 18:02.040. Canisius placed third in the open four race with a time of 22:38.487.

RACE NOTES:
• Saturday marked the first time that Canisius raced in the Head of the Genesee event since 2014.
• For all eight members of the novice eight team, this was their first collegiate race.

UP NEXT
The Blue and Gold are back in action on Oct. 15 when they head to Pittsburg, Pa., to take part in the Yinzer Cup, hosted by Robert Morris.
