Hockey Unable to Keep Pace in Series Finale at Penn State

Penn State scored three times in the first and third periods on its way to a 7-5 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's ice hockey action Saturday at the Pegula Ice Arena in State College, Pa.

Ryan Kirwan scored two goals and added an assist, Kevin Wall notched one goal and chipped in three assists and Ture Linden finished with a goal and two helpers to pace the Nittany Lions (2-0-0).

Graduate student Nick Bowman, seniors Daniel DiGrande and Keaton Mastrodonato, junior Randy Hernandez and sophomore Alton McDermott accounted for the five Golden Griffin (0-2-0) goals.

Christian Berger staked Penn State to a 1-0 lead just 1:17 into the contest with a power-play tally, firing a wrist shot over the glove of Canisius netminder John Hawthorne from the top of the point.

Bowman brought the Griffs level at the 8:19 mark of the opening frame when he snapped a wrist shot past the blocker of Noah Grannan from the middle of the slot to knot the score at 1-1.

Penn State regained their lead just 64 seconds later, however, as Linden fired a shot from the left face-off circle that changed direction off a Canisius defender and found its way into the Griffs net to make it 2-1.

Kirwan stretched the Nittany Lions lead to 3-1 with a little more than five minutes to play in the first where he was able to put one past Hawthorne from close range after a point shot deflected to him while he was unmarked just off the right post.

The teams traded goals during the second period as DiGrande made it 3-2 contest at the 7:39 mark of the middle frame with a 5-on-3 goal before Tyler Gratton restored Penn State's two-goal advantage as he finished off a transition opportunity.

In the third, the Nittany Lions used a power-play goal from Kirwan and an event-strength marker by Wall less than two minutes apart to build a 6-2 cushion.

McDermott notched his first of the campaign to trim the Canisius deficit to 6-3, but Ashton Calder once again made it a four-goal game with an even-strength tally just past the 12-minute mark of the third.

Hernandez and Mastrodonato closed out the score sheet in the final three minutes of regulation as Hernandez netted his first of the season at the 17:35 of the third before Mastodonato scored on the power play in the last minute of regulation to determine to the final margin.
