DiGrande’s Hat Trick Lifts Hockey Past Ferris State

Senior Daniel DiGrande recorded a hat trick to pace Canisius in a 5-3 victory over Ferris State in collegiate men's hockey action Friday at Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.

DiGrande also picked up an assist to finish with a four-point night while graduate students J.D. Pogue and Nick Bowman accounted for the other Golden Griffins (1-2-0) tallies. Senior goaltender Jacob Barczewski made 28 saves between the pipes for Canisius.

Stepan Pokorny, Luke Farthing and Jason Brancheau tallied the three goals for the Bulldogs (1-3-1). Logan Stein finished with 22 saves in goal for Ferris State.

Pogue staked the Griffs to a 1-0 lead near the midway mark of the first period with a shorthanded goal, creating a turnover at the top of the defensive zone and racing to the other end on a breakaway before beating Stein on the backhand for his first of the season.

The teams traded goals just 28 seconds apart later in the frame. DiGrande began the sequence seconds before the 15-minute mark of the first, firing home a rebound off the end wall to give the Griffs a 2-0 cushion only to see Pokorny respond for Ferris State on the following shift, jamming home a loose puck from just in front of the Canisius crease to make it a one-goal game.

DiGrande struck for his second of the contest nearly six minutes into the second period when he collected the puck in the right face-off circle and fired a shot off the crossbar and in to restore Canisius' two-goal advantage, 3-1.

Farthing again made it a one-goal game with 15:13 elapsed in the second period as he deposited Jason's Brancheau's centering feed between the legs of Canisius goaltender Jacob Barczewski during 4-on-4 play to trim the Canisius advantage.

Bowman gave the Griffs their third two-goal lead of the game less than 90 seconds into the third period, finishing off a 2-on-1 rush with a shot over the left shoulder of Stein to push the Griffs margin to 4-2.
Ferris State pulled within one for the third time in the contest with less than three minutes remaining when Brancheau put Bradley Marek's pass past Barczewski to pull within one, 4-3.

DiGrande closed out the scoring with 1:37 to play as he hit the empty net from center ice to complete the hat trick and seal the Griffs' two-goal victory.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Post Game Comments
"Great effort win tonight. There were some moments in the game where our guys really stepped up. We were able to celebrate some of them, but (Jacob) Barczewski the last 10 minutes was unbelievable. He put on a display late to keep us in the lead. It was a big block by (Alton) McDermott that ended up with a big-time goal by (Nick) Bowman on a 2-on-1 where McDermott had to go off the ice because that one hurt, but those matter in a huge way. We had some great penalty kills; we were we were able to be up in a third period and we were able to show how disciplined we can be. We also able to show how predictable we could be for each other. All-in-all, everybody played well and had moments of high effort, so it was great win for the Griffs.

"It's our it's our team learning. It's only the third game three of the regular season. All over college hockey early on, everybody's seeing it. It's been a little scrambly early in games. Teams are trying to figure out how they want to play, let alone how they want to play against an opponent. There was a little bit of that tonight. What helped us the most was we were able to get some things going and all of a sudden, you start to feel a little more comfortable. You start to feel like it's going to go your way. Obviously, we score two early goals. Those are always good things. So, it wasn't anything in particular that we focused on. It was just our ability to get to our game faster."
