Hockey Falls at Penn State in Season Opener

Jimmy Dowd Jr. scored the game-winning goal and added two assists to lead Penn State to a 5-2 victory over Canisius in collegiate men's ice hockey action Friday at the Pegula Ice Arena in State College, Pa.

Ashton Calder, Ryan Kirwan, Connor MacEachern and Kevin Wall also scored for the Nittany Lions. Liam Souliere finished with 35 saves between the pipes for the Penn State.

Junior Max Kouznetsov tallied both goals while senior Keaton Mastrodonato finished with two assists for the Golden Griffins. Senior Jacob Barczewski recorded 40 stops between the pipes for Canisius.

In the season-opening contest for both programs, The Nittany Lions scored twice in a 1:52 span midway through the first period to take a 2-0 lead.

Calder opened the scoring at the 11:39 mark of the opening frame with a power-play goal, banging home a loose puck on the doorstep before Ryan Kirwan doubled the Nittany Lions advantage less than two minutes later, depositing centering feed from Ture Linden under the blocker of Barczewski to make it a 2-0 game.

After a scoreless second, Kouznetsov got the Golden Griffins in the board less than three minutes into the third when he redirected graduate student J.D. Pogue's shot attempt past Penn State goaltender Liam Souliere to make it a 2-1 contest.

The Nittany Lions regained their two-goal advantage less than six minutes later as Dowd Jr. finished off a tic-tac-toe passing sequence with a tap-in goal to give PSU a 3-1 edge.

The teams traded goals just 83 seconds apart midway through the third. MacEachern made it a 4-1 contest at the 13:29 mark of the frame, redirecting a centering feed from Connor McMenamin past the blocker of Barczewski while Kouznetsov pulled the Griffs back within two with Canisius' second power-play goal of the contest as he deflected Mastrodonato's wrist shot past the blocker of Souliere to make it a 4-2 contest.

Penn State closed out the scoring in the final-minute as Wall recorded an empty-net tally with 23.1 seconds remaining to determine the final margin.
