Volleyball Sweeps Manhattan at Home

Senior Ella Loussia and sophomore Kara Zaucha combined to put down 20 kills to help lead the Canisius volleyball team to 3-0 sweep of Manhattan on "Dig Pink Day" at the Koessler Athletic Center Saturday afternoon. With the win, the Golden Griffins record moves to 10-12 and 8-5 in MAAC play, while the Jaspers record slips to 1-23 and 1-13 during MAAC play. The Griffs won the match by scores of 25-19, 25-18 and 25-10.

Loussia also had three service aces in the victory, which brought her season total to 48. Her 48 service aces move her into sole possession of fourth place all-time in program history for service aces in a single season, passing former Griffs Shanon Zaranek and Somer Sharpstone, who each had 47 during the 1997 and 1998 seasons respectively.

Canisius took control early in the first set going up by as much as eight before a late Manhattan rally saw the Griffs lead slip to three. A pair of kills from Zaucha allowed the Griffs stretch their lead before a kill from senior middle hitter Elle Shult wrapped up the 25-19 first set victory and 1-0 match lead. Canisius hit at nearly .400 in the first set with their final hitting percentage at .394.

Down 10-4 early in the second set, junior right side Alexa Albinson took control of the match igniting a 5-0 run from the service line, with Loussia picking up three-straight kills to bring the Griffs to within one. The Blue and Gold would have three more 3-0 runs to complete the comeback and win the second at 25-18 and take a 2-0 match lead. Loussia and Albinson each had five kills during the second set to pace the Griffs.

Ahead 2-0 in the match, the Griffs slammed the door on the Jaspers during the second set with a resounding 25-10 victory with a 12-0 run with senior libero Bree Long on the service line. Throughout the run, Long had two service aces, sophomore outside hitter Taylor Baldwin had three kills, while Zaucha added a pair of kills.

The Griffs had one of their best hitting games of the season, hitting at a .319 (41-12-91) clip for the contest. Junior Taylor Baldwin was good for nine kills in the victory, while freshman setter Ella Bourque recorded 35 assists. Long chipped in 17 digs and Zaucha had two blocks to her credit, as well.

The Jaspers hit at a clip .071 (27-20-98) with Julia Menocal leading the way with 15 kills. Julieanne McKee had 18 assists in the losing cause for Manhattan.
