Volleyball Falls in Three Sets to Iona

The Canisius volleyball team fell in straight-sets to visiting Iona in MAAC volleyball action Sunday afternoon at the Koessler Athletic Center. The Gaels won the match with setscores of 25-15, 27-25 and 25-23. Iona improved its record to 16-9 overall and 10-4 in MAAC action with its second-straight victory, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 10-13 overall and 8-6 in league play.

The first set was all Iona, with the Gaels forcing an early timeout from the Griffs, before using a 7-0 run to close out the set 25-15 and take the 1-0 lead in the match. Sophomore outside hitter Kara Zaucha paced the Blue and Gold offensively in the first set with three kills. As a team, Iona hit at a clip of .286 for the session, while taking advantage of 10 Canisius attack errors.

In the second set with the score tied 18-18, the Griffs used a quick 4-1 scoring push fueled by a pair of kills from Zaucha and a kill from junior Alexa Albinson to give the home team at 22-19 lead. The Gaels would respond to make it 23-23, but Canisius had an answer with a kill by senior Elle Shult to take a 24-23 advantage. The Griffs and Gaels would go point-for-point until a 3-0 run by Iona, sealed by a Canisius attack error, gave the Gaels a 27-25 set victory and 2-0 advantage in the match. Each side had 12 kills in the second set, but the Blue and Gold held the advantage in total blocks with five. Shult picked up four of those blocks in the set with sophomore Emma Mans adding two of her own.

Down 20-12 in the third frame, Canisius rallied thanks to a 10-4 run, led by three kills from sophomore Taylor Baldwin. With Albinson on the service line, the Griffs made it a 24-23 following a kill from Zaucha to force Iona to take a timeout. Out of that timeout, Iona's Julia Thomas ended the contest with her third of three kills on the day, as the Gaels took the third set by a score of 25-23.

Zaucha led the way for Canisius with her match-high 15 kills, and she was also credited with 11 digs and two service aces. Freshman setter Ella Bourque added 32 assists, her ninth straight match of 30 or more assists, and senior libero Bree Long posted 18 digs in the losing effort. Shult ended the day with seven total blocks (one solo, six block assists), while Albinson added seven kills and three block assists.

Emma Jacobs and Greta Stajde each had 10 kills in the win for Iona, while Tamara Pichardo was credited with 22 assists. As a team, the Gaels posted a team hitting percentage of .160 to go with 17 total blocks, led by Thomas, who had seven block assists on the afternoon.
