Volleyball Drops Road Match at Fairfield

Even with outside hitter Kara Zaucha and Ella Loussia both notching over 15 kills and 54 assists from freshman setter Ella Bourque, the Canisius volleyball team fell to Fairfield in five sets on Sunday afternoon.

Loussia registered a match-high 19 kills while Zaucha pitched in 16. Bourque finished just was one assist shy of matching her season high for assists, set against Quinnipiac on Sept. 18.

The Golden Griffins record moved to 9-12 on the year and 7-5 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play amidst their three-match losing streak. The Stags saw their record improve to 17-6 overall and 11-1 in MAAC play, which keeps them atop of the conference.

Down by as much as five in the first set, the Griffs opened up a 6-0 rally late in the set, led by two service aces from Taylor Baldwin and kills from Loussia and junior right-side Alexa Albinson, to take a 21-19 lead. Canisius closed the set with a kill from senior middle hitter Elle Shult and a Fairfield attack error to win, 25-21, and go up 1-0. As a team, the Griffs dominated on offense, hitting at a .275 clip, a full .100 better than Fairfield throughout the first set.

It would be all Fairfield the next two sets with the Stags winning the second set, 25-18, and the third, 25-17, in part due to multiple lengthy scoring runs throughout.

With their backs against the wall entering the fourth set, the Griffs erupted for a 9-2 run midway through the frame, spurred by a trio of kills from Zaucha and Baldwin, to grab a 21-12 lead. A late push by the Stags was not enough as the Griffs closed the set with a Loussia kill to win the frame, 25-20, and knot the match 2-2.

The Griffs rode their momentum from the fourth set to leap into the final frame, racing out to a 6-1 lead . The Stags would answer with eight unanswered points to get back into the contest before using a 5-0 run to seal a 15-11 set victory and claim the match.

Senior libero Bree Long chipped in 13 digs while Shult and Zaucha each were tied for the match lead in total blocks with four.

For Fairfield, KJ Johnson paced the Stags with 18 kills, Blakely Montgomery had 31 assists and Morgan Doll led the match with 15 digs. As a team, the Stags hit at a clip of .267 (62-22-150).
