Volleyball Comes Up Short at Quinnipiac

Quinnipiac took advantage of 13 service aces, led by Nicole Legg's match-high seven, as the host Bobcats defeated Canisius 3-1 in MAAC volleyball action Saturday afternoon in Hamden, Conn.

The victory improved Quinnipiac to 6-13 overall and 5-7 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 9-11 overall and 7-4 in conference matches with their second-straight loss. The Bobcats earned the match victory by set scores of 25-14, 21-25, 25-20, 25-19.

Trailing in the match 1-0, the Griffs were down 20-16 in the second set before sophomore Kara Zaucha started a 7-0 scoring spurt for the Blue and Gold with a service ace. Quinnipiac was able to end that Canisius run with a side-out kill to make the score read 23-21, but the Griffs answered with a kill by sophomore Taylor Baldwin, and then an attack error by the Bobcats ended the second frame with Canisius winning 25-21.
 
With the match tied at 1-1, Quinnipiac took the third set 25-20 and then closed out the match with a 25-19 victory in the fourth and final set of the afternoon. In the final frame, Quinnipiac recorded seven of its 13 service aces on the day, with Legg accounting for five of those. The win for Quinnipiac was the Bobcats fourth over the Griffs in the last seven meetings, dating back to the spring 2020 season.
 
For Canisius, senior Ella Loussia led the way with 14 kills to go with nine digs and a service ace. Junior Alexa Albinson had 11 kills and six block assists, while Baldwin chipped in nine kills, three block assists and two digs. Freshman setter Ella Bourque registered 38 assists, six digs and two aces in the losing effort, while senior libero Bree Long had 15 digs and an assist. As a team, Canisius had 12 block assists on the day, led by Albinson's six, and the Griffs ended the contest hitting .181 for the match.
 
Quinnipiac's Aryanah Diaz led the Bobcats with her 13 kills, while teammate Alexandra Tennon posted 10 kills in the winning effort. Legg was credited with five block assists to go with her seven aces, and Damia Gunes was credited with 38 assists, eight digs and two aces for the Bobcats.

GAME NOTES

• Canisius and Quinnipiac split the regular-season series this year, with each team winning on its home court.
• With her service ace in the second set, Loussia tied former Griff Sarah Poldesh for seventh on the school's single-season aces list with 43. Loussia now has at least one service ace in 19 of the team's 21 matches this year.

• Bourque, who leads the MAAC in assists per set, recorded her sixth-straight 30-plus assist effort on Saturday.
• Albinson is averaging 3.6 block assists per match in the team's last five outings.

Canisius will close out its four-match road swing at Fairfield on Sunday, with game time set for 1 p.m. The contest will be broadcast live on the Stags Sports Network.
