Hockey Defeated by Miami on Pink the Rink Night

Miami University scored five unanswered goals during a nearly 30-minute stretch to erase a 1-0 deficit and defeat Canisius, 5-3, in collegiate men's ice hockey action Friday at LECOM Harborcenter.

Matthew Barbolini, PJ Fletcher and Joe Cassetti all finished with a goal an assist for the Redhawks (3-1-1). Ryan Savage and Artur Turansky also scored for Miami while Ludvig Persson made 18 saves in goal for the visitors.

Senior Ryan Miotto and juniors Cody Schiavon and Jackson Decker scored for the Golden Griffins (2-4-0). Senior John Hawthorne finished with 30 stops between the pipes for Canisius.

Miotto opened the scoring with a power-play goal just past the midway point of the first period when he deposited junior Randy Hernandez's cross-ice feed over a sprawled out Persson for his first of the campaign.

Ryan Savage brought the Redhawks level at the 4:08 mark of the second period as he redirected Axel Kumlin's point shot over the right shoulder of Hawthorne to tie the game at 1-1.

Fletcher put Miami in front near the midway point of the second, converting on a shorthanded breakaway to give the Redhawks a 2-1 lead.

Barbolini increased the Miami advantage to 3-1 in the opening minute of the third, stuffing home a loose puck from just off the right post for his third of the campaign.

The Redhawks struck twice in a 65-second span during the middle stages of the final frame to build a 5-1 cushion. Turansky began the sequence at the 10:14 mark of the third when he jammed home his own rebound while Cassetti beat Hawthorne with a backhanded effort from close range moments later to make it a four-goal contest.

Canisius scored the last two goals of the game as Schiavon netted his first collegiate tally with a rebound goal at the 12:49 mark while Decker struck in the final minute of the game with a wrist shot to the blocker side of Persson to determine the final margin.
