Volleyball Sweeps Manhattan

Behind four service aces from senior libero Bree Long, the Canisius volleyball team defeated Manhattan, 3-0, in Metro Atlantic Athletic Association volleyball action Sunday at Draddy Gymnasium in Riverdale, N.Y.

The Golden Griffins won the match with scores of 25-13, 25-18, 25-18, improving to 6-9 on the year and 4-2 in league play. Manhattan slipped to 1-14 overall and 1-5 in the MAAC.

Manhattan opened the match with a quick 3-1 run, but the Griffs roared back with a 10-2 stretch, ignited by three kills from senior outside hitter Ella Loussia and a kill from junior middle blocker Alexa Albinson to make it 11-5 and force a Jaspers timeout. A later 7-3 run, this time led by two kills from sophomore outside hitter Taylor Baldwin, sealed the first set victory, 25-13, and gave the Griffs a 1-0 match lead.

Tied 14-all midway through the second set, the Griffs were able to break away, using a 9-3 spurt, with Loussia registering three kills, highlighted by back-to-back spikes, to take a commanding 23-17 lead. After a Manhattan timeout, the Griffs closed the set with a kill from sophomore middle blocker Emma Mans to claim the frame, 25-18, and take a 2-0 lead.

In a mirror of the second set, the third set was a close back-and-forth, this time coming down to the wire with each team knotted at 18-all.  Freshman setter Ella Bourque kicked off a 7-0 run and iced the Jaspers with two service aces to give the Griffs a 25-18 set victory and 3-0 match triumph.

Loussia paced the Griffs with a match-best 15 kills while Bourque totaled 31 assists, the 14th time this season the Yorkville, Ill., native has registered 25 or more assists in a match. At the net, senior Elle Shult recorded five total blocks, with one solo and four block assists while Mans chipped in three block assists.

Camila Gomez and Julia Monocal lead Manhattan with eight kills apiece while Sarah Emmons had 13 assists. Only two players on the Jaspers registered one or more total blocks with Ananda Burgos having two and Menocal chipping in one.

Match Notes:

• With today's 3-0 victory, the Griffs extend their winning streak over Manhattan to seven straight. Canisius has not lost a match against Manhattan since 2017.
• Freshman setter Shannon Kehoe made her official debut for the Griffs when she took the court to start the second set. Kehoe's first collegiate point was a service ace during the second set to make it 24-17.
• With Kehoe's appearance, every member of the Griffs has appeared in at least one set during the 2022 season.
• Shult's five total blocks today were one shy of her season high six, set against Niagara on Sept. 25.
• With her service ace in the first set, Loussia now has a service ace in 14 straight matches.
