Hockey Settles for Series Split at Ferris State

Ferris State scored three goals in the second period to break open a close contest and defeat Canisius, 4-1, in collegiate men's hockey action Saturday at Ewigleben Ice Arena in Big Rapids, Mich.

Dallas Tulik, Matt Slick and Stepan Pokorny accounted for the three second-period goals for the Bulldogs (2-3-1), who salvaged a split of the non-conference series after dropping the opener against the Golden Griffins (1-3-0) Friday, 5-3. Noah Giesbrecht finished with 29 saves between the pipes for Ferris State.

Senior Nick Bowman tallied his third goal of the season for Canisius. Senior goaltender Jacob Barczewski got the start in goal the Griffs and made 18 stops before being replaced by senior John Hawthorne at the start of the third, who turned aside all four shots he faced in relief.

Holding a 1-0 lead after Mitch Deelstra netted his first of the campaign late in the opening frame, the Bulldogs struck for three goals in the middle period to take control of the contest.

Tulik began the second-period barrage just 2:39 into the middle frame with a power-play goal as his centering attempt deflected off a Canisius defender and into the goal.

Slick increased the Bulldogs cushion to 3-0 at the 12:49 mark of the frame, beating Barczewski with a shot under the blocker from the left side while on the rush.

Pokorny capped the second-period surge for Ferris State with less than two minutes to play in the stanza, getting behind the Canisius defense before sliding the puck past Barczewski on the backhand to make it a 4-0 contest

Bowman spoiled the Bulldogs shutout bid at the 13:51 mark of the third period, creating a turnover deep in the Ferris State before putting a puck on net that slipped past Giesbrecht to determine the final margin.

Head Coach Trevor Large's Post Game Comments
"That was a tough road game. They were obviously more opportunistic tonight. A combination of that and some costly turnovers by us. They were able to earn some breakaways and odd-man rushes and they capitalized. I'm disappointed that we get a five-minute power play early and we're unable to capitalize and really get some momentum from it. There were some moments in the game where we were trying to scratch and claw and we got some good scoring chances, but their goalie really played well and he didn't let us get back in the game.

"The line of (Stefano) Bottini, (Markus) Boguslavsky and (Erik) Urbank was our best line tonight. They were unbelievable with a high compete level and it's a good reminder that if you just play hard, play smart and play our way, you can be very effective as a line. Hopefully, the rest of our group can learn from those guys tonight, because they were leading the way for us.

"When things weren't going well for us in the second period, as a staff we kept talking about how we need to keep learning from the group. So, we were able to try and get some momentum with some line combinations that were different and we learned that some of those did work a little bit. Maybe we found something that can help us coming up in the next couple days. It is a learning experience for us. We're on the road in a tough building against a Ferris team that really had their back against the wall and obviously didn't want to get swept at home early in the season. So, we did show that familiar resiliency, but my same message of we're not playing for moral victories. I did like our fight. We continued to fight to scratch and claw and that's a good thing. But we have to do a better job if a team gets up a goal against us and again, we need to answer quick quickly. So, the learning continues.

"We're going rest up. We have horses in the stables, so to speak. So, we'll get some fresh guys in there. We'll see how some other line combinations and other defenseman that get back in the lineup can do. It's one of those things where everybody's going to play over the next couple of games and we need to make sure that we're fresh so we can compete at the level that we expect."
