Hockey Falls to Niagara in Exhibition Contest

Niagara used a pair of first-period goals and a combined 17-save shutout from three different goaltenders to defeat Canisius, 2-0, in exhibition action Saturday at LECOM Harborcenter in downtown Buffalo.

Christian Gorscak and Olivier Gauthier accounted for the only two goals of the contest a little more than three minutes apart in the opening frame. Gorscak got the Purple Eagles on the board at the 15:29 mark of the first when he deflected a point shot from Max Ruoho past Golden Griffins netminder Jacob Barczewski.

Gauthier doubled the Niagara margin to 2-0 with 95 seconds to play in first when he redirected Jason Pineo's slap shot from the slot past Barczewski.

The Purple Eagles goaltenders made the pair of first-period tallies stand as Chad Veltri (five saves) got the start while Jake Sibell (seven saves) played the second and Ryan Ouellette (five saves) took over in goal for the third.

Canisius' best chance to get on the board came in the final minute of regulation, when sophomore Alton McDermott beat Ouellette with a wrist shot from the middle of the slot, but his attempt rang off the right post and stayed out of the goal.
