Monmouth’s Second-Half Shooting Sinks Women’s Basketball

Monmouth made 11 of its 18 shot attempts (61.1 percent) while outscoring Canisius 35-22 in the second half, leading to a 60-48 victory Saturday in MAAC women's basketball action at OceanFirst Bank Center in West Long Branch, N.J.

Sophomore guard Dani Haskell scored a team-high 13 points for the Griffs (2-14, 0-7 MAAC), while freshman guard Athina Lexa recorded her second straight double-digit point total, scoring 10 points and logging five rebounds.

Stella Clark was the lone Monmouth player to log 10-plus points, scoring a game-high 14 points to go along with five rebounds and five assists. Ariana Vanderhoop added nine points for the Hawks (9-5, 4-1 MAAC).

GAME RECAP
Canisius held Monmouth's offense in-check early in the contest after allowing a layup on the game's opening possession. Following the basket, the Griffs went on a 6-1 run to take a 9-6 lead while holding the Hawks without a field goal for over six minutes and causing eight consecutive misses.

Monmouth went on a 6-0 run for 1:43 late in the quarter before Lexa made a layup to cut the Hawks lead to 12-11 after the opening 10 minutes.

On the heels of her 14-point performance on Thursday at Saint Peter's, Lexa netted seven of Canisius' 11 points in the opening frame.

Midway through the second quarter, Monmouth grabbed a 20-15 lead before Haskell drilled a pair of 3-pointers in 33 seconds, giving Canisius the lead and causing the Hawks to call a timeout. Haskell's back-to-back treys kick started an 11-2 Canisius run, giving the Griffs a 26-22 advantage.

Ariana Vanderhoop cut Canisius' lead to just one, 26-25, after banking in her half-court shot at the buzzer to conclude the opening half.

Monmouth scored 13 of the first 14 points in the third quarter to open a 38-27 lead over the Griffs.

As a team, the Hawks shot 6-for-10 from the floor in the third quarter, while holding Canisius to make just two of its 14 shot attempts. Monmouth outscored Canisius 21-8 in the period, taking a 46-34 lead into the fourth quarter.

A 3-pointer by freshman guard Cheyenne Stubbs and a layup by senior forward Kayla Jackson trimmed Monmouth's lead to 47-39, but Monmouth then countered by going on an 8-2 run, giving Monmouth its largest lead of the game, 55-41.

Canisius responded to the Hawks run with a 7-0 run of its own in 71 seconds to make it a seven-point game, 55-48, with 2:24 remaining.

Monmouth closed the contest scoring the final five points behind a layup and a 3-pointer with one minute left.

Head Coach Sahar Nusseibeh's Postgame Comments
"
I thought we had more fight and discipline offensively overall today compared to Saint Peter's. We need to figure out how to put a more competitive third quarter. We can't allow a minor momentum shift to turn into a major one. Were looking forward to another opportunity to get better tomorrow, then again on Monday versus Marist."

Game Notes
• Saturday was the 18th all-time meeting between the two teams, all of which have come since Monmouth joined the MAAC before the 2013-14 season. Monmouth tied the series, 9-9, with the victory.
• Haskell led the Griffs in scoring for the ninth time this season and has scored at least 10 points in 14 of her 16 appearances.
• Lexa recorded 10 points and a career-high five rebounds in her first collegiate start Saturday. She also matched her single-game bests in assists (3) and steals (2).
• With her two steals Saturday, Jackson has recorded a steal in each of her last nine games played.
• Freshman forward Rhay Porter led the Griffs with her six rebounds, marking the ninth time in her last 12 games that she has secured at least five rebounds.
