Saint Peter's shot nearly 54 percent from the field, aiding the host Peacocks to a 74-55 victory over Canisius in MAAC women's basketball action Thursday from Run Baby Run Arena in Jersey City, N.J.

Graduate student guard Kendrea Williams scored a career-high 28 points for the Peacocks, who shot 30-of-56 (53.6 percent) in the contest. Junior center Kassondra Brown added 17 points and eight rebounds for Saint Peter's (6-8, 3-2 MAAC).

Freshman guard Athina Lexa scored a season-high 14 points for Canisius, while junior guard Shaunae Brown chipped in 12 points behind a career-high four 3-pointers for the Griffs (2-13, 0-6 MAAC).

GAME RECAP
Canisius scored eight of its 16 first-quarter points from the free-throw line. The free throws were a part of an 8-1 run that put the Griffs in front, 13-9, with 3:21 left in the quarter.

Saint Peter's followed up Canisius' run by scoring six unanswered points in 1:13, quickly regaining the lead, 15-13. However, the lead would be short-lived as a 3-pointer by Brown gave Canisius a 16-15 advantage heading into the second quarter.

The Peacocks opened the first two minutes of the second frame on a 9-2 run, expanding their lead to 24-18. Canisius would cut the deficit to three before a layup by Nickelle O'Neil and a Williams 3-pointer allowed Saint Peter's to build an eight-point cushion, 33-25.

A 3-pointer by senior guard Erika Joseph with six seconds left in the half put Canisius down five heading into the locker room, 36-31.

Lexa scored Canisius' first four points in the second half before Saint Peter's went on a 21-4 run to increase its lead to 21 points. The Peacocks held Canisius scoreless for six-plus minutes, scoring 14 unanswered points during the pivotal stretch in play.

Four of Canisius' five made field goals in the fourth quarter came from beyond the arc, as both teams netted 14 points in the period.

Head Coach Sahar Nusseibeh's Postgame Comments
"Tonight was disappointing considering the two good prep days we had leading up to tonight. We need to learn how to be consistent in effort, focus and execution. We have a young team who are in the process of learning how to not just get through, but grow through, adversity."

"Athina has had a really good few practices leading up to the game. We put her in places to be successful and she took advantage of that. Athina is going to continue to grow into a really solid player in this league. I'm happy she met with personal success tonight."

Game Notes
• Thursday was the 71st all-time meeting between the two Jesuit programs. Saint Peter's took the lead in the series, 36-35, and has now won the last six over Canisius.
• Freshman guard Athina Lexa scored 14 points and secured four rebounds in the loss, both of which are season highs. Her previous career highs came in home games against Manhattan on Dec. 21 (nine points) and Niagara on Jan. 9 (three rebounds).
