Fairfield Defeats Women’s Basketball

Fairfield's Lou Lopez-Sénéchal and Andrea Hernangómez each scored 20 points, while Hernangómez secured 12 rebounds for her third double-double of the season, aiding the visiting Stags (9-5, 6-0 MAAC) to a 73-37 victory over Canisius in MAAC women's basketball action at the Koessler Athletic Center on Saturday.
 
Sophomore guard Dani Haskell posted a Canisius-best 10 points for her 11th consecutive game scoring in double figures. Senior forward Kayla Jackson netted eight points while senior guard Erika Joseph and junior guard Shaunae Brown chipped in six points apiece for the Griffs (2-12, 0-5 MAAC).
 
GAME RECAP
After a made free throw by Jackson put the Griffs ahead 34 seconds into the contest, Fairfield went on a 21-6 run in just over 11 minutes of action to give the Stags a 21-7 advantage just before the midway point of the first half.
 
A 3-pointer by Haskell cut the deficit to 11 before Fairfield responded with a 15-3 run to close out the second quarter, taking a 36-13 lead into the locker room.
 
Fairfield opened the second half on an 8-3 run while Canisius scored seven unanswered points in a span of 1:56 before the Stags netted 23 of the game's next 27 points.
 
The Griffs closed out the final 4:30 of the contest scoring 10 of the game's final 16 points.
 
Game Notes
• Saturday was the 67th all-time meeting between the two MAAC Jesuit institutions. The Griffs are now 25-42 against the Stags with the loss.
• Graduate student forward Ella Väätänen appeared in her 100th career game Saturday. It was Väätänen's 19th game with the Griffs after playing the previous 81 at LIU over three seasons (2017-19).
• Väätänen also extended her block streak to nine games, which is the program's longest since Laura (Granzow) Buetow had a 13-game streak overlapping the 2006-07 and 2007-08 seasons.
 
Up Next
Canisius will start a three-game road trip on Thursday, heading to New Jersey to square off against Saint Peter's. Tipoff between the Golden Griffins and Peacocks is slated for a noon tip from Run Baby Run Arena inside the Yanitelli Center.
