Game Recap: Volleyball |

Volleyball Falls to Penn and Bucknell Saturday

The Canisius volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches Saturday to host Penn and Bucknell on day two of the Sheraton City University Volleyball Invitational, in Philadelphia, Penn.

In the opening match of the doubleheader, the Golden Griffins (0-6) fell short in straight sets to the host Penn (23-25, 23-25, 20-25).

To conclude the weekend, Canisius was defeated in four sets by Bucknell (19-25, 15-25, 25-15, 19-25).

Match One Recap
Canisius raced out to a 12-5 lead over the Quakers in the opening set, paced by three kills from Ella Loussia, two kills courtesy of Emma Mans and a kill each from Rachel Kinney, Elle Shult and Avery Dole. Penn responded with an 8-1 spurt, tying the match at 13-all. With Canisius leading 20-16 late in the opening set, Penn swung the momentum, finishing with a 9-3 scoring run to take the opening set, 25-23.

The Griffs led 8-6 early in the second frame before Penn answered, claiming seven of the following eight points to retake the lead, 13-9. The Blue and Gold responded with a 5-1 burst of their own to knot the match at 14. The teams traded points until the Quakers notched two of the last three points of the fame to claim the second set, 25-23, and extend their lead in the match to 2-0.

The third set saw Canisius build an early 4-1 lead, only to have Penn respond with five straight points to take a 6-4 lead. The Quakers would lead the rest of the way as they posted a 25-20 victory in the third set to complete the sweep.

Canisius was led once again by Loussia on the attack with 11 kills, as the Blue and Gold hit .178 (38-19-107) as a team. Vanleer and Kinney both recorded nine kills in the defeat. Dole posted a match-high 32 assists and junior Bree Long recorded a contest best 17 digs.

Penn was paced by Autumn Leak and Margaret Planek on the attack with 13 and 12 kills, respectively. The Quakers posted a .248 (42-16-105) hitting percentage in the victory. Sydney Ormiston recorded a team-high 31 helpers in the winning effort.

Match Two Recap
After falling behind to begin the first set, Canisius was unable to swing the momentum back to their side of the net. Bucknell was able to extend their lead to as many as six throughout the frame before the Bison closed the nightcap's opening frame courtesy of a kill to claim the set, 25-19.

Bucknell took control early in the second frame behind a 9-0 scoring run to grab an 11-4 lead. The Bison never looked back, taking the second set, 25-15.

Canisius was able to flip the script at the beginning of the third set, running out to a 6-1 lead with two kills from Giulia La Longa and a kill courtesy of Kara Zaucha. The Griffs scored eight of nine points in the middle of the set to stretch their lead to double digits, 21-11. The Blue and Gold scored four of the last five points, capped off by a kill from Zaucha to claim the set, 25-15.

Bucknell took a slim 9-8 margin over Canisius in the early stages of the fourth set, but the Griffs followed with four straight points to take a 12-9 lead. After the Blue and Gold kept their three point advantage, 15-12, the Bison stormed back with an 11-2 spurt to retake the lead, 23-17. Bucknell scored the final two points to defeat the Griffs in four sets, 3-1.
