Volleyball Drops Pair to Duquesne and West Virginia Friday

The Canisius volleyball team fell to non-conference foes Duquesne and West Virginia on day one of the 2021 Western New York Invitational, co-hosted by Canisius and Buffalo. 

In the opening match of the doubleheader, the Golden Griffins (0-8) came up short to Duquesne (4-4) in straight sets (21-25, 23-25, 24-26). 

To conclude the day, Canisius was defeated by West Virginia (7-0) in three sets (23-25, 17-25, 14-25). 


Match One Recap
After falling behind 4-1 to begin the contest, Canisius responded by scoring four of the following five points to tie the set at 5-all With the Blue and Gold leading 13-12, Duquesne swung the momentum in their favor with a 7-2 spurt to retake the lead, 19-15. Following back-to-back points by Canisius, the Dukes closed the opening frame with a kill courtesy of Anna Shoemake to post a 25-21 victory. 

Canisius scored the second set's opening point via a Duquesne attack error, but the Dukes answered, rattling off five straight points to take a 5-1 lead. The Griffs responded with four straight of their own to square the set at five. Back-and-forth play was the theme of the set, but Duquesne scored the final two points to take the frame, 25-23. 

The Dukes jumped out to a 12-6 lead over host Canisius in the third set, however the Griffs answered with a 6-2 run, behind two kills from Elle Shult and a kill courtesy of freshman Kara Zauchato trim the deficit, 14-12. Duquesne once again took control of the set, rattling off six unanswered points to take its largest lead of the frame, 21-13. The Griffs followed the Dukes run with an 11-3 burst of their own to knot the score at 24-all, only to see Duquesne score the final two points of the contest to take the set and complete the sweep. 

Canisius was led on the attack by Rachel Kinney's 10 kills, as Canisius hit .204 (34-12-108) as a team. Ashley Kekeisen dished out 17 assists and Bree Long posted a contest-best 15 digs. 

Morgan Kelly's 20 kills fueled Duquesne on the attack, as the Dukes hit at a .226 (48-20-124) clip. Hailey Poling handed out 38 assists in the victory. Summer Slade led the Duquesne players in digs with 15 while Camile Spencer and Poling pitched in 12 digs apiece. 

Match Two Recap
It was a back-and-forth start to the nightcap before Canisius would swing the momentum with an 8-0 burst to take a 15-9 advantage over West Virginia in the opening set. The Mountaineers answered, scoring seven of the next eight point to tie the match at 16. After the Griffs tied the match at 22 via a West Virginia service error, the Mountaineers claimed three of the final four points in the set to take the opening frame of the contest, 25-23. 

A fast start in the second set saw the Griffs hold a 7-2 edge, only to have the Mountaineers follow with six straight points to take a one point lead over Canisius, 8-7. Following a Canisius timeout, the Griffs responded with a 6-2 run, highlighted by two kills from Emma Mans, and a kill each courtesy of Elle Shult, Kara Zaucha, and Ella Loussia. West Virginia would close the set on a 15-4 run to take the second set over Canisius, 25-17. 

In the third and final set of the evening, Canisius was unable to gain traction in the frame as West Virginia claimed the set 25-14 and swept the Golden Griffins. 

Canisius was led by six kills each from Camila Vazquez and Loussia, as the Griffs were limited to .133 (27-15-90) on the attack. Callie Chamulak handed out 10 assists in the contest for Canisius. 

West Virginia was paced by Natali Petrova's match-high 14 kills, as the Mountaineers hit .265 (43-17-98) as a team. Lacey Zerwas dished out a match-best 35 assists in the winning effort. 

Match Notes 

• Following Friday's opener, Canisius trails Duquesne in the all-time matchup, 2-6. 
• Canisius trails the all-time series with West Virginia, 0-4. 
• Friday's nightcap with the Mountaineers was the sixth time the Golden Griffins have hosted a Power Five opponent inside the Koessler Athletic Center. 
• The most recent Power Five matchup on Main Street prior to Friday's tilt versus the Mountaineers was in 2010, when the Griffs welcomed Mississippi State.

The Griffs return to the court Saturday as Canisius travels to cross town rival Buffalo to conclude the 2021 Western New York Invitational. Match time is slated for 4 p.m. at Alumni Arena.
