Volleyball Defeated by Coppin State Friday

The Canisius volleyball team was defeated by Coppin State Friday in the opening match of the Sheraton City University Volleyball Invitational, hosted by the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia, Penn. 

The Eagles (2-2) claimed the opening set of the showdown before the Golden Griffins (0-4) answered by winning the second frame to even the match. Coppin State responded, winning the final two sets to secure the 3-1 victory (23-25, 25-22, 20-25, 25-27). 

Match Recap
With the score knotted at 13-all in the first set, Coppin State responded with four straight points to build a 17-13 advantage. The Griffs answered with eight unanswered points, featuring two Ella Loussia kills and two service aces courtesy of Elle Shult, to reclaim the lead, 21-17. The Blue and Gold would stretch their lead out to 23-20, but the Eagles ended the set by scoring the final five points to take the opening frame, 25-23. 

Trailing 6-2 early in the second set, Canisius scored six of the next seven points to take the lead, 8-7. The momentum continued to swing, as Coppin State responded with their own run, to grab a 12-8 advantage. The Griffs eventually took control, scoring seven of the final 11 points, highlighted by two kills from Rachel Kinney, to claim the set, 25-22.  

The third set saw Coppin State lead wire-to-wire as the Eagles opened the frame on a 5-1 run and never looked back, building a 21-14 advantage before tallying three of the final four points of the set to post a 25-20 victory. 

The Blue and Gold flipped the script to begin the fourth set, jumping out to an early 6-2 lead, which included a kill each from Kinney, Shult, and Emma Mans. Coppin State responded with a 4-1 spurt, followed by three consecutive points from the Griffs, who led 10-6. The Eagles stormed back to retake the lead, 13-11, with a 7-1 run. Late in the set with Canisius leading 25-24, Coppin State claimed the contest with three straight points to take the fourth set, 27-25, and win the matchup with the Griffs, 3-1.

Canisius was led on the attack by Loussia's 16 kills, as the Griffs posted a .160 (57-29-175) hitting percentage. Kinney and Mans posted double-digit kills for the Blue and Gold, with 13 and 11, respectively. Ashley Kekeisen dished out a match-high 30 assists in the effort. Bree Long was tied for match-high honors with 23 digs, while Kinney recorded a career-best 21 digs. 

The Coppin State attack was led by Miajavon Coleman's 14 kills, as the Eagles hit .171 (44-17-158) as a team. Ashley Roman matched Long's effort with 23 digs in the winning effort. 

Match Notes 

• Canisius still leads the all-time matchup with Coppin State, 2-1. Friday was the first matchup for the two programs since 2017. 
• Kekeisen's 30 assists marked the third occasion in her career that the senior has dished out 30-plus assists. 
• Kinney's 21 digs established a career high for the senior outside hitter.
