Volleyball Drops MAAC Contest to Quinnipiac

The Canisius volleyball team was defeated by Quinnipiac Sunday afternoon in four sets (22-25, 25-22, 15-25, 22-25) inside the Koessler Athletic Center. The win moves the Bobcats to 3-10 overall and 2-2 in MAAC play, while the Golden Griffins slipped to 2-11 overall and 2-2 in conference action with their second-straight loss.

Match Recap
After falling behind 16-11 to begin the contest, Canisius responded by scoring six consecutive points to take their first lead of the match at 17-16. Following a Quinnipiac timeout with the Griffs leading 21-20, the Bobcats recorded five of the next six points to claim the first set by a score of 25-22. 

Canisius utilized a fast start to begin the second frame, as the Griffs raced out to an early 10-3 edge. Canisius held its largest lead of the match at seven points with the scoreboard reading 13-6, however the Bobcats used a 10-2 burst to capture the lead at 16-15. The Blue and Gold swung the momentum back to their side of the net with an 8-2 run to clinch the second set, 25-22. 

In the third set, Canisius was unable to gain traction against the Bobcats, as Quinnipiac led the frame wire-to-wire, taking the set by a score of 25-15. 

The Griffs fell behind 8-4 to begin the fourth set, forcing the home team to take an early timeout. Following the break, the Blue and Gold went on a 9-4 run to retake the lead at 13-12. Late in the frame, Canisius led Quinnipiac 18-17, but the Bobcats went on an 8-4 scoring spurt to win the fourth set 25-22 to close out the match. 

The Canisius attack was led by junior Ella Loussia's 16 kills, as the Griffs hit .241 (48-16-133) for the contest as a team. Senior Ashley Kekeisen was credited with a match-high 27 assists and fellow senior Callie Chamulak also recorded double-digit assists, with 14, in the losing effort. Junior libero Bree Long posted a match-high 32 digs for the Griffs in the effort. 

Quinnipiac's attack was fueled by Maggie Baker's 17 kills, as the Bobcats hit .220 (53-20-150) in the victory. Chloe Ka'Ahanui dished out 20 assists and libero Faavae Kismel Moe posted 24 digs. 

Match Notes 

• Canisius leads the all-time matchup with Quinnipiac, 16-7.
• The win for the Bobcats in the Koessler Athletic Center was Quinnipiac's first since the 2017 season.

• Sunday was the eighth occasion where Kekeisen has recorded 25-plus assists in her career. 
• Long's 32 digs was a season-high for the junior libero. 
• The contest was the fourth consecutive match that Kekeisen and Chamulak have handed out double-digit assists.

The Golden Griffins return to action next Saturday, Oct. 2, when Canisius travels to Iona in New Rochelle, N.Y. That contest is set for a 1 p.m., start time.
