Trailing Iona 2-0 after the first two sets of the day, the Canisius volleyball team ripped off three-straight sets victories to record a 3-2 win over the Gaels in MAAC volleyball action at the Hynes Center in New Rochelle, N.Y. The Golden Griffins won the match by scores of 16-25, 22-25, 25-22, 25-23, 15-13.

The win put an end to Canisius' two-match slide, and moved the team to 3-11 overall and 3-2 in conference action. Iona fell to 3-10 overall and 1-4 in MAAC action with its fourth-straight loss.

MATCH RECAP
Iona jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the match after scoring wins in the first two sets. Out of the intermission, Canisius made the score 2-1 thanks to a 25-22 victory in set No. 3. In that frame, junior Ella Loussia and freshman Kara Zaucha combined for five kills, while senior Hannah Nelson added a pair of service aces, including one on set-point that allowed the Griffs to extend the match.

In the fourth set, Canisius trailed Iona 23-22 before the Gaels committed a service error and an attack error that put the Griffs in the lead at 24-23. The Blue and Gold's defense forced a fifth after Zaucha and senior Camila Vazquez joined forces on a block assist, one of Canisius' 14 total blocks on the day.

With the fifth set tied at 12-12, a kill by Zaucha and an Iona attack error put Canisius up 14-12. Moments later, Loussia ended the match with a kill off an assist from senior setter Ashley Kekeisen, her team-leading 11th kill of the contest.

Loussia and Zaucha (10 kills) combined for 21 of Canisius' 55 kills on the day, as the Griffs hit .168 for the contest. Loussia also added 10 digs to the winning effort for her first double-double performance of the season. Zaucha was credited with five block assists and three digs to go with her season-high 10 kills, while Vazquez added eight kills, four solo blocks and four block assists.

Senior setter Callie Chamulak had 21 assists and five digs for the Blue and Gold while Kekeisen added 20 assists and eight digs. Junior libero Bree Long posted 22 digs to Canisius' victory, as the Griffs extended their win streak over Iona to five straight, dating back to the 2019 campaign.
