Volleyball Defeats Siena to Begin MAAC Play

The Canisius volleyball team opened up the 2021 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference slate with a five-set victory (23-25, 25-21, 20-25, 25-13, 15-12) over Siena Saturday afternoon inside the Koessler Athletic Center. 

After dropping the contest's opening set, the Golden Griffins (1-9, 1-0 MAAC) responded by winning the second frame. After the Saints (0-11, 0-1 MAAC) claimed the third set, the Golden Griffins would command the matchup's final two sets to secure the win.

Siena jumped out to an 11-6 advantage over the Blue and Gold in the opening set before Canisius answered with a 4-0 spurt to trim the deficit to a point, 11-10. Leading 17-16 in the middle of the opening frame, the Saints utilized four consecutive points to expand their lead to five, 21-16. Siena would claim two of the set's final three points to win the opening frame, 25-23. 

Once again, Siena began the contest's second set with a fast start, as the Saints jumped out to an early 7-2 lead . Following a Griffs' timeout, the Blue and Gold swung the momentum back in their favor with an 8-2 run as Canisius took the lead, 10-9. Siena would regain control of the set, leading 17-14, however Canisius closed the frame on an 11-4 burst to take the frame, 25-21. 

The third set saw Canisius build a 15-13 advantage over the Saints entering the media timeout. Following the break, Siena used a 9-2 scoring edge to retake the lead, 22-17, prompting a Canisius timeout. The Saints were able to clinch the third set over the Griffs, 25-20, following a Canisius service error. 

Needing a win  to extend the match, Canisius held a 16-13 advantage midway through the fourth frame before rattling off nine consecutive points to take the set, 25-13, and forcing a decisive fifth set. 

In the fifth and final set, Siena held a one point lead over the Griffs, 8-7, miday through the frame. Following the media timeout, Canisius outscored the Saints, 8-4, capping off the victory courtesy of a Siena service error. 

Canisius was led by Rachel Kinney's 17 kills, as the Griffs hit at a .277 (61-18-155) clip. Ella Loussia and Giulia La Longa also recorded double-digit kills with 13 and 12, respectively. Ashley Kekeisen led the Griffs with 22 assists, as Callie Chamulak dished out 21 in the winning effort. Bree Long recorded a match-high 23 digs for the Blue and Gold. 

Greta Stjade led the Saints with 13 kills, as Siena hit .221 (60-24-163) as a team. Meghan Johnsson and Claire Isaksen both recorded 20-plus assists with 25 and 23, respectively. Gracie Halley paced the Saints defensively with 21 digs. 

Match Notes 

• Siena still leads the all-time matchup over Canisius 19-35. Canisius has claimed the last three matchups versus the Saints. 
• The .277 hitting percentage for Canisius was the best for the Griffs during the 2021 campaign. 
• Kinney's 17 kills tied the Indianapolis, Ind., native's career best. 
• Following today's performance, Long currently sits at 982 digs for her career. 
• Canisius has now won three-straight MAAC openers.

The Golden Griffins return to action tomorrow afternoon, as the Blue and Gold welcome Marist to the Koessler Athletic Center. Match time is slated for noon and the contest can be streamed live on ESPN3.
