Volleyball Completes Weekend Sweep With Victory Over Marist

The Canisius volleyball team completed the weekend sweep with a four-set victory (25-20, 25-16, 21-25, 25-19) over Marist Sunday afternoon inside the Koessler Athletic Center.

After the Golden Griffins (2-9, 2-0 MAAC) took the contest's first two sets, Marist (5-8, 0-2 MAAC) responded by winning the third set. The Blue and Gold clinched the victory in the fourth set, downing the Red Foxes to complete the weekend sweep over MAAC foes Siena and Marist.

Match Recap
Canisius held a 20-14 lead over the Red Foxes late in the first set, before Marist responded with a 4-1 run to trim the Griffs' lead to three, 21-18. The Blue and Gold answered, scoring four of the final six points in the frame to clinch the matchup's opening set, 25-20.

The teams matched each other early in the second set, playing to a 12-all draw midway through the frame. The Griffs swung the momentum in their favor moments later, bursting for a 6-0 run and an 18-12 edge. Following a Red Foxes timeout, Canisius out-scored Marist, 7-4, to win the frame, 25-16.

In the third set, Marist held a 15-12 advantage over Canisius entering the media timeout. After the stoppage, the Blue and Gold took the lead 18-16, courtesy of a 6-1 run. Marist responded behind a 9-3 spurt to win their only set of the contest, 25-21.

Leading 19-16 in the fourth and final set, Canisius scored five consecutive points to expand their lead to eight, 24-16. Facing match point, the Red Foxes would score three straight points before Canisius followed with a kill to seal the victory.

Canisius was led by Camila Vazquez with 10 kills, as the Griffs hit at a .243 clip (54-19-144) for the match. Callie Chamulak handed out a team best 23 assists. Libero Bree Long posted 19 digs in the victory, eclipsing the 1,000-dig milestone for her career.

Marist was paced by Gabriella Heimbauer's 15 kills, as Marist hit .213 (51-21-141) as a team. McKinley Fox dished out a match-high 44 assists and Morgan Owens recorded 24 digs.

Head Coach Shannon Thompson's Comments
"We had a great team win. We put a lot of emphasis on playing as a team and not focusing on having one individual carry the team. All 19 of us pushed through to make sure that we were able to come out on top today."
