FIVE THINGS TO KNOW

1. Setting the Pitch
On Wednesday, the Canisius men's soccer team travels to Pittsburgh to face Duquesne in the Griffs' second and final non-conference road contest. Kickoff from Rooney Field is slated for a 7 p.m. start.

2. Last Time Out
Ethan Homler factored in both of Binghamton's late first half tallies as the Bearcats defeated Canisius, 3-1, in non-conference men's soccer action at the Demske Sports Complex last Saturday.

Noah Luescher opened the scoring for Binghamton in the 40th minute before Homler potted the Bearcats' second goal of the half on a penalty kick, following a Canisius red card before a corner kick in the 42nd minute.

Canisius got on the board in the 59th minute when Alessio Atzori took a penalty kick after Noah Hodson was tripped just inside the 18-yard box. Atzori's shot beat Binghamton's goalkeeper, P.J. Parker, rolling inside the right post, cutting the Bearcats lead to 2-1.

Binghamton's Rory Anderson added an insurance marker with 32 seconds left to close out the scoring.

3. Back-to-Back Penalties
After missing a penalty kick in a draw against St. Bonaventure on Sept. 3, Canisius converted on a penalty try against Binghamton last Saturday.

It is the first time the Griffs have had back-to-back games with a penalty since 2018 (Sept. 22 vs. St. Bonaventure and Sept. 26 vs. Quinnipiac).

Like Canisius, the opposition has had a penalty kick opportunity in the last two matches. The last time Canisius allowed a penalty kick in consecutive games dates back to 2017 (Sept. 19 at Rutgers and Sept. 23 vs. Binghamton).

4. Extra Time
Canisius' first three matches of the season went to overtime, marking the first time since 2011. It was the fifth instance in program history that the Griffs played three straight overtime contests. The other three occurred in 1995, the last two games of the 1999 campaign and the 2000 season-opener and 2009.

According to Top Drawer Soccer, the Griffs' three overtime matches are tied for the third-most played by a Division I program this season.

College of Charleston and Saint Louis have each played four overtime games this season. With three OT games, Canisius is tied with 11 other programs (Bellarmine, Chicago State, Florida Gulf Coast, Holy Cross, Loyola Marymount, Seton Hall, SIU Edwardsville, Stetson, Temple and Wisconsin).

5. First-Time Goal Scorers
Last Saturday, Alessio Atzori's penalty kick goal halted Canisius' streak of first collegiate goals scored at four. Luke Szablewski, Riley Wagner, Ryan Dagelman and Noah Hodson all scored their first collegiate goals for the Griffs before Atzori's tally.
