Volleyball Falls to Michigan State and Western Michigan Saturday

The Canisius volleyball team dropped a pair of non-conference matches to Michigan State and Western Michigan Saturday on day two of the Auto-Owners Insurance Spartan Invitational in East Lansing, Mich. 

In the opening match of the doubleheader, the Golden Griffins (0-3) hung tough versus the host Spartans in the opening two sets, but was unable to gain traction as the Spartans claimed all three sets (22-25, 19-25, 4-25). 

To conclude the weekend, Canisius fell in straight sets to Western Michigan (18-25, 12-25, 16-25). 

Match One Recap
After falling behind 2-0 to begin the opening set, the Griffs stormed back with five straight points, including two kills by Ella Loussia, and a kill each from Hannah Nelson and Emma Mans. Back-and-forth efforts on both sides of the net saw the Blue and Gold behind by one point at the media timeout, 15-14. The host Spartans ended the opening frame scoring four of the final six points to take the set, 25-22. 

Canisius was able to swing the momentum early in the second set, leading 15-13 entering the media break. Following the timeout, Michigan State (2-0) responded with a 7-0 spurt to retake the lead in the set, 20-15. The Spartans eventually took the afternoon's second frame sealed by a kill courtesy of Biamba Kabengele, 25-19. 

After being tied 1-1 in the third and final set of the contest, Michigan State took control of the match as the Spartans followed with a 24-3 stretch to sweep the Golden Griffins in straight sets. 

Canisius was held to .078 hitting percentage (23-16-90) against the Spartans, led by seven kills from Mans. Freshman Avery Dole dished out a team-high eight assists and junior Bree Long was tied for a match-high 12 digs. 

Michigan State hit at a .307 clip (39-12-88), paced by Cecilee Max-Brown's match-high 13 kills. Setter Julia Bishop handed out 22 helpers and Talia Edmonds matched Long's 12 digs. 

Match Two Recap
With the score knotted at six-all in the first set, Western Michigan (2-1) swung the momentum with five consecutive points to take a 11-6 lead. Behind 21-14 later in the set, the Blue and Gold would score four straight of their own, featured by a kill each courtesy of Loussia and Elle Shult. Western Michigan closed the opening set with a 4-0 run, claiming the first set, 25-18. 

The Broncos took control from the beginning of the second frame, racing out to an early 8-2 lead and never looking back as they ended the second set with a 6-0 scoring run to take the frame, 25-12. 

Tied at 7-all early in the third set, Western Michigan put together a 6-0 run to take a 13-7 advantage. With the Broncos holding a 15-11 lead in the frame, Western Michigan ended the amtch with a 10-5 spurt, completing the sweep with a 25-16 victory.


The Golden Griffins were limited to a .143 (25-14-77) attack clip. Senior
Hannah Nelson led the Griffs with eight kills. Avery Dole contributed with 11 assists and Hayley Montoya led the Blue and Gold with 10 digs. 

Western Michigan was fueled by Julia Marr's match-high 12 kills, as the Broncos hit .311 (41-13-90) as a team. Rose Duffy led the match with 29 assists. 

Match Notes 

• Both matches were the second meetings against both programs for Canisius. The Griffs trail both series, 2-0. 
Hayley Montoya made her collegiate debut in the afternoon's opening match with Michigan State. The Waxhaw, N.C., native also made her first career start at libero for Canisius against Western Michigan. 
• Freshman Emma Mans was named to the All-Tournament Team. 

Up Next

The Griffs return to the court next weekend as they travel to Philadelphia to partake in the Penn Volleyball Invitational September 3 and 4. The Blue and Gold will face Coppin State Friday evening before battling host school Penn and Bucknell in a doubleheader Saturday.
