Jake Burlingame hit a two-run home run in the first inning and Kyle Warner threw his second complete game of the season to pace Canisius to a 5-1 victory over Quinnipiac in the opening game of Sunday's Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference doubleheader at the Demske Sports Complex in Buffalo.
The second game of the twin bill was suspended after the third inning as lingering rain showers led to unplayable field conditions. The Golden Griffins were leading the Bobcats, 5-4, when the game was halted.
Canisius scored the game's first four runs, highlighted by the two-run home run that Burlingame walloped to center field in the first. Vinny Chiarenza had an RBI groundout in the third inning before Mike Mazzara singled home Jacob Martins in the fourth inning.
Kyle Maves hit a ground-rule RBI double in the fifth to try and spark a Quinnipiac rally, but Max Grant restored the Griffs' four-run lead in the next half-inning with an RBI fielder's choice.
Warner went the distance for Canisius, allowing one run while scattering four hits. The graduate student walked a batter and struck out four.
Quinnipiac's Brandyn Garcia had a complete game for the Bobcats, allowing six hits, five runs (four earned), walking three and striking out a career-high 10.
Quinnipiac scored four runs in the first inning of the nightcap to build an early advantage. Sebastian Mueller had an RBI single before Colton Bender and Ian Ostberg recorded back-to-back RBI groundouts. Kyle Maves capped off the inning for the Bobcats with an RBI single.
Tom Peltier earned the start on the mound for the Griffs but was unable to escape the first inning. The sophomore gave up three hits, allowed four runs, all earned, and walked three in 0.2 innings of work.
Canisius took the lead in the third inning as the Griffs plated five runs after drawing seven walks and recording one hit.
Mike Steffan drew a bases-loaded walk to bring home Canisius' first run of the game. Max Grant had the lone hit of the inning for the Blue and Gold, plating a pair of runs on a single up the middle. The tying and go-ahead run later scored on a pair of Quinnipiac wild pitches.
Before the game's suspension, Joe Barberio pitched 2.1 innings of relief, allowing just one hit, walking a pair and striking out three.
Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"We came out and got a strong pitching performance from Kyle Warner. He did a great job for us getting back out there. Our defense played well and we did a good job getting some jobs done offensively to create runs."
