Baseball Wins Suspended Game, Splits Doubleheader with Quinnipiac

Canisius and Quinnipiac played 20 innings of Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference baseball at the Demske Sports Complex on Monday. At the end, the Griffs came away with two victories in three decisions.

The first four innings played was the resumption of the second game of Sunday's doubleheader that was suspended s due to unplayable field condition resulting from lingering rain. Canisius mercy-ruled Quinnipiac in the suspended game, 15-5.

Quinnipiac (5-19, 5-19 MAAC) used a 10-strikeout performance by Arthur Correira to come away with a 2-1 victory in the first game of Monday's scheduled doubleheader before Canisius (14-10, 14-10 MAAC) split the twin bill with a 10-2 win in game two.

SUSPENDED GAME RECAP

Canisius and Quinnipiac resumed the second game of Sunday's doubleheader, which was suspended after the third inning due to unplayable field conditions. The Griffs had a 5-4 lead when the game was halted.

A three-run sixth inning helped increase Canisius' lead as Jake Burlingame hit a two-run home run before Max Grant singled home another run.

Quinnipiac added a run in the top half of the seventh inning on a sacrifice fly to cut Canisius' lead to 8-5.

The Griffs put the game out of reach in the seventh inning, scoring seven runs to evoke the 10-run mercy rule in a 15-5 victory.

Burlingame opened the inning's scoring with an RBI triple down the right field line, scoring Kenny Dodson. Vinny Chiarenza and Grant recorded RBI singles before Jacob Martins singled home a pair of runs. Dodson capped off the inning with a two-run double to the right-center field gap, which ended the game.

Joe Barberio earned the win, pitching 2.1 innings on Sunday before the suspension.

Andrew Fron pitched four innings of relief on Monday, allowing two hits and an unearned run. He walked one and struck out three.

GAME ONE RECAP

Quinnipiac's Arthur Correira struck out a career-high 10 batters in a complete-game effort as he guided Quinnipiac to a 2-1 victory in the first game of Monday's doubleheader.

Jake Burlingame had two of Canisius' four hits in the contest, while Jacob Victor drove in the team's only run.

Will Frank went the distance for Canisius, allowing two runs on six hits, walking a pair and striking out four.

Quinnipiac opened the scoring in the first inning on a wild pitch by Frank. The Bobcats scored in the third after the Griffs caught a Quinnipiac player stealing second, but a runner at third crossed home plate before the out occurred.

Jacob Victor cut the Quinnipiac lead in half, 2-1, with an RBI groundout in the bottom of the third, scoring Kyle Kush.

A Canisius hit-and-run attempt went awry in the hopes of sparking a rally in the seventh inning, as a batted ball went right to a Quinnipiac defender at second base, allowing the Bobcats to get a game-ending double play.

GAME TWO RECAP

Canisius scored the first eight runs of the game throughout the first two innings, while Matt Duffy pitched six shutout innings in his home debut to give the Griffs a 10-2 victory, splitting the doubleheader.

Duffy scattered three hits and struck out five in his first appearance since March 28. He also walked just one batter.

Carlin Dick and Dylan Vincent recorded a pair of hits, while Jacob Victor (4), Jake Burlingame and Vincent (2) each drove in multiple runs in the contest.

The scoring started early for the Griffs as the Blue and Gold recorded five hits — all of which went for extra bases — in a four-run first inning. Burlingame hit his third home run of the weekend, crushing a two-run shot to center field. Vincent followed up with an RBI triple that scored Vinny Chiarenza before Vincent crossed home plate on a Jacob Martins RBI double.

Victor kickstarted the Griffs' second consecutive four-run inning with a bases-clearing triple to right-center field. Vincent then brought Victor home with an RBI single going through the left side of the infield.

The Bobcats scored twice in the eighth inning, once on a passed ball and another on a wild pitch.

Quinnipiac's Andrew Cubberly struck out a career-high 10 batters in 4.2 innings of relief.

Blake DeCarr was the Bobcats' pitcher of record after pitching one-plus innings, surrendering seven hits and seven runs (six earned).

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Our offense found solid success when we came out ready to hit and stopped being passive. It was great to see guys get pitches they were looking for and use their barrel to make things happen and score runs."

"Fron, Duffy, Warner and Frank were effective and crisp. They stepped on the mound, ready to go and executed their plan, and let the defense work behind them. When they execute and pitch their game, good things happen."

"JB (Jake Burlingame) continues to allow his talent to show. He works extremely hard at his craft and he is starting to see that pay off. He is a catalyst for our team. We need him to just keep on going."

GAME NOTES
