Women's Basketball Adds Five to 2021-22 Roster

Head women's basketball head coach Scott Hemer has announced the addition of five student-athletes to the Canisius roster. Cheyenne Stubbs, Hannah Dolan, Xabthippi Karatasiou, Athina Lexa and Elia Paez have all signed on to be members of the Golden Griffin squad in 2021-22.

Cheyenne Stubbs • 5-foot-7 • Guard
Stubbs joins the Griffs from Bradenton, Fla., where she was four-year member of the Braden River basketball program. The three-year letterwinner averaged 20.4 points per game in her senior season, with roughly three assists per game.

Over the course of her high school career, Stubbs racked up all-area honors and was nominated as Player of the Year in both 2019 and 2020. Additionally, Stubbs earned the title of Sarasota High School and All-County All Star game MVP.

Hemer's comments on Stubbs
"Cheyenne brings an exciting flair to our backcourt.  She's a lead guard who's dynamic with the ball in her hands and can beat you in a number of ways. Her teammates will really enjoy being on the floor with her."

Hannah Dolan • 5-foot-10 • Guard
A native of Williamsville, N.Y., Dolan makes her way to Main Street after spending five years playing for Williamsville South before finishing her career at Northfield Mount Hermon prep school in Massachusetts. While at Williamsville South, Dolan joined the 1,000-point club while being a sixth-team all-state and All-Western New York selection. She helped lead Williamsville South to five sectional titles and averaged 14.0 points per game as a senior.

Dolan's mother, Kristin, served as her head coach at Williamsville South and also played her collegaite basketball at Canisius. Hannah's father, Mike, is a professor of kinesiology at Canisius and spent many years as an athletic trainer for the Blue and Gold.

Hemer's comments on Dolan
"We're thrilled to add Hannah's versatility on the perimeter.  She plays with a strong feel for the game, can shoot from beyond the arc, attacks the basket well and even more importantly, competes on both ends of the floor."

Xanthippi Karatasiou • 5-foot-8 • Guard
Karatasiou joins the Griffs from Katerini, Greece, where she played four years of high school hoops at Pierikos Arhelaos and seven years of club ball with Vafiras BC. Karatasiou is not a stranger to international play, being a member of the Greek National U16 and U18 Teams. From 2018-2020, Karatasious and the national team made three appearances in the Final Six round of the Greek National League playoffs.

Hemer's comments on Karatasiou
"Xanthippi has the potential to become a big scorer for us. Besides her height being a nice addition, she's also a worker on both ends of the floor and that will be great for us."

Athina Lexa • 5-foot-8 • Guard
In addition to Karatasiou, the Griffs will add another Greek National Team member in Lexa. A member of the U16 and U18 Greek National Teams from 2016-20, Lexa is decorated at the international level. In the 2018 Panhellenic Tournament, she led her team to second-place finishes at both the U16 and U18 levels, while also earning a second-place finish in the FIBA European games, earned All-Tournament First Team accolades in the process.

In three seasons, Lexa made two appearances in the Panhellenic School Championship game, winning the title in 2019. From 2019-21, the Thessoloniki, Greece, native served as team captain for her PAOK team and earned a spot in training camp for the Greek National Team, who is looking to make its first Olympic appearance since 2004.

Hemer's comments on Lexa
"It's tremendous anytime you can add a three-level scorer like Athina. She's such a smart player who is quick to the rim, can hurt you in a number of ways with her midrange game and her shot from the perimeter can be deadly. She'll definitely be fun to watch."

Elia Paez • 5-foot-9 • Guard
Paez also brings international experience to the Griffs' roster, coming from Sabadell, Spain, where she competed at the U12, U16 and U18 levels for the Spanish National Team. Paez spent three seasons with Basket Almeda, where she led her team to a final four appearance in the Spanish Championship.

During her five seasons with C.N. Sabadell, Paez helped her team to a fourth-place finish in the Catalonia U12 Championship in 2014.

Hemer's comments on Paez
"We love Elia's potential because of her size and length. She's another three-level scorer to add to the mix and with her strengths, Elia can become a very dangerous threat. She plays fast and has tremendous vision which is exciting to watch."
