Game Recap: Baseball |

Offense Shines in Nightcap of Baseball’s Doubleheader Split

For the second time in three games, Canisius had the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference's newly-minted mercy rule implemented as the Griffs scored 20 runs in the latter game of Wednesday's doubleheader with Niagara from Bobo Field.

After losing the opening game of the twin bill, 3-2, the Griffs scored runs in five of the seven innings, taking a 20-2 victory over the Purple Eagles before the game was called due to Canisius holding at least a 10-run lead after the seventh inning.

GAME ONE RECAP
Niagara scored a pair of runs during a two-out rally in the sixth inning to give the Purple Eagles a 3-2 victory in the opening game of Wednesday's doubleheader.

After the first two batters of the sixth inning were retired, Cole O'Connor hit a double to the right-center field gap hoping to spark a Niagara rally. Benny Serrano, the following batter, singled home O'Connor to tie the game, 2-2. Serrano advanced to second on the throw from the outfield prior to stealing third base. Michael Gabriele singled home Serrano to give the Purple Eagles the lead.

Vinny Chiarenza factored in both of Canisius' runs in the opener, reaching on a fielder's choice in the first inning, which scored Max Felsenstein.

Niagara's Spencer Marcus tied the game in the third inning with an RBI single that scored Matt Zaremba, who led the inning off with a double.

After drawing a leadoff walk, Chiarenza scored thanks to two Niagara errors on the same play in the top half of the sixth inning, giving Canisius a 2-1 lead. The Purple Eagles attempted a pickoff, but an errant throw by the pitcher went into right field, allowing Chiarenza to reach third base. An error by Niagara's right fielder enabled Chiarenza to cross the plate.

Joe Barberio earned the start for the Griffs, going 5.2 innings and allowing six hits, three runs, walking one while striking out two.

Jacob Bruning earned the win for Niagara, striking out six Griffs in 6.1 innings of work. Matt Grace earned his first save of the season for the Purple Eagles.

GAME TWO RECAP
Eleven different Griffs scored a run, while 10 others registered at least one hit in the Griffs' 20-2 mercy-rule shortened victory over the Purple Eagles in the nightcap. Six different players recorded multiple hits and five scored more than once.

This is the second time in three games that the 10-run rule has been utilized.

Canisius' 18-run victory is the most lopsided win for Canisius in a "Battle of the Bridge" rivalry game since coming away with a 22-1 victory over the Purple Eagles on May 11, 2013.

Niagara scored first on an RBI single by Benny Serrano that scored Dawson Bailey in the first inning.

Canisius countered with three runs in the following half inning. After the first two batters were set down, the Griffs drew back-to-back walks before Max Felsenstein singled home Jake Burlingame. Mike DeStefano would also score on the play, advancing on a throw from the outfield. The next batter, Max Grant, would bring home Felsenstein with a RBI single.

Canisius' nine-run fourth inning featured 13 batters and none of the team's five hits going for extra bases. The first eight batters reached base prior to the team's first out. The Blue and Gold drew a pair of walks and were hit by three pitches, all of which came consecutively.

Burlingame scored twice and all three of DeStefano's RBI came in inning. Only one Canisius batter did not cross home plate in the fourth.

The Griffs plated a run in the fifth, two in the sixth and five more one in the seventh before the mercy rule took place.

Tom Peltier shined in his first collegiate start for the Griffs, pitching six innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on three hits as he induced seven flyouts and 10 groundouts. The sophomore did not walk a walk. At one point, Peltier retired 13 consecutive Purple Eagles batters

Jeff DeStefano came out of the bullpen for the Griffs, getting a pair of flyouts and groundout to set Niagara down in order to close out the game.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Today was good to salvage a split. We need to collect wins and we were able to bounce back after a tough one and answer the bell."

"Our starters threw really well today. Barberio gave us a quality start, but we just didn't get the big hit with runners in scoring position for him. In game two, Peltier filled the zone and worked extremely efficient with all his pitches. He was great."

"Overall, our group is starting to figure some things out. They are improving each day and learning from their mistakes. We need to continue to build on that next time out."

GAME NOTES
• The 18-run victory in the second game is the biggest margin of victory since shutting out Saint Peter's, 23-0, on April 12, 2015. It is the 11th time in program history the Griffs have won by at least 18 runs.
• For the second year in a row, Canisius recorded a 20-run game. It is the first time the Griffs have had back-to-back seasons with at least one 20-run game since Canisius recorded 15 such games over a six-year span from 2008-13.
• Canisius' nine-run fourth inning was the first time the Griffs recorded nine-plus runs in a single inning since plating 10 in the seventh inning against IPFW on Feb. 26, 2017.
• Burlingame's five runs scored in the latter game ties the program record, which had been done four times prior. Jose Torralba was the last to do it against Buffalo on April 22, 2014. The others to do so were Paul Panik, twice, and Alec Cabello. Burlingame also drew a career-high three walks.
• Both Canisius starters established career highs in innings pitched on Wednesday. Barberio broke his previous high of 2.2 innings that was set on March 20 at Fairfield. Peltier broke his previous long of 2.1 innings against Iona on March 27.
Brennan Chisholm recorded his first hit and RBI with Canisius in the sixth inning of the second game.
• DeStefano's three runs scored and three RBI are both new single-game highs for the sophomore.
• Grant recorded his first collegiate three-hit game and multi-RBI game in the nightcap.

UP NEXT
