Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Takes Pair from Manhattan to Sweep Series

Canisius used a late-inning surge at the plate to take the first game and plate discipline prevailed for the Golden Griffins in the nightcap as the Blue and Gold swept Sunday's doubleheader and the weekend series from Manhattan at the Demske Sports Complex.

A four-run sixth inning erased a two-run deficit to help give Canisius their first of two victories of the day. Plate discipline was in full effect for Canisius in the nightcap as the Griffs drew 12 walks, including eight in the sixth inning, to aid the Blue and Gold to a 13-2 mercy-rule shortened victory.

As a team on Sunday, the Griffs batted .304, while posting an on-base percentage of .477 and a slugging percentage of .500.

Pitching was also the Griffs' best friend as Canisius limited the Jaspers to 10 hits in 14 innings of work. The battery finished with an ERA of 1.93 for the doubleheader and limited Manhattan to hit just .196 team batting average.

GAME ONE RECAP
Canisius used a four-run sixth inning to avenge a 2-0 deficit to win the opening game of Sunday's doubleheader, 4-2.

Manhattan's Trevor Santos scored the game's first run in the fifth inning on a wild pitch by Canisius starter Will Frank. Santos singled to right field but a fielding error enabled him to reach third base.

The following inning, Sam Franco hit a leadoff home run into the netting in left-center field to give the Jaspers a 2-0 lead.

Canisius response to the Jaspers' pair of runs was with a four-run sixth inning. Max Grant drew a leadoff walk before the Griffs strung four consecutive hits off Manhattan's starter, Logan Muratalla. Jacob Victor roped an RBI-triple down the right field line to cut Manhattan's lead in half. Vinny Chiarenza dribbled a grounder down the third base line, giving him a single but kept Victor at third base. Gibson Krzeminski followed suit by clearing the bases with a two-run triple down the right field line.

In the seventh, Frank would induce a groundout and fly-out before walking a pinch-hitter to close out his outing. The graduate student finished the game one out shy of his second complete game of the season, allowing five hits, two runs (one earned), walking a pair and striking out four.

Jarod Burmaster came in from the bullpen and struck out the only batter he faced to earn the Griffs' first save of the season.

GAME TWO RECAP
Canisius scored runs in the first three innings before drawing eight walks in an eight-run sixth inning that featured 14 batters come up to bat as the Griffs took the finale against Manhattan in a mercy-rule shortened contest, 13-2.

The scoring started when Jacob Victor singled home Max Grant, who reached on a fielder's choice and advanced to second on a Manhattan throwing error, in the first inning.

In the ensuing inning, after Jake Burlingame was hit by a pitch and Kyle Kush singled up the middle, Max Felsenstein drove home Burlingame with an RBI-single.

Vinny Chiarenza led off the third with a blistering home run to the deepest part of the ballpark, extending the Griffs lead to 3-0.

Manhattan cut into the Canisius lead with a pair of RBI ground outs in the fourth inning to make it a 3-2 ballgame.

Grant opened the fifth inning reaching on a Jaspers fielding error prior to advancing to second on a passed ball. Victor doubled home Grant with an opposite field RBI double to the right-center gap that gave the Griffs a 4-2 lead prior to play being halted for two and a half hours due to rain.

After the break, Gibson Krzeminski drove home Victor on a sacrifice fly that added another run.

Canisius starter Kyle Warner did not return to the mound following the 150-minute delay after pitching the first five innings. Warner earned the win after allowing five hits, two runs and striking out a batter. Of his 51 pitches, 39 went for strikes.

In the sixth inning, eight of Canisius' 14 batters that came up to the plate scored, thanks to eight walks drawn, a hit batsman and a single.

Levi Abbott came in to relieve Warner and shut down the Jaspers in order in both of the innings he pitched. Five of the six outs for Abbott came via ground outs.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Today was a team effort throughout. We pitched well, played good defense and strung together timely at-bats when we needed to. Our starting pitching did a great job going out there and commanding the game. Hats off to both of those guys again for leading the charge."

"Vinny Chiarenza had another complete weekend for us. He is a spark to our team both at the plate and on defense."

GAME NOTES
• The four-game sweep of Manhattan is the first time the Griffs swept a four-game series since March 9 and 10, 2014 against Norfolk State. It is the first four-game sweep in a MAAC series since sweeping Niagara on April 16 and 17, 1994.
• The pair of triples in the first game was the second time this year the Griffs have logged multiple triples in a game, with the other instance occurring in the first game against Niagara on April 7.
• Burmaster's save in the opening game was the graduate student's second career save and his first since March 24, 2019 against Siena.
• Chiarenza's home run in the fifth inning was his sixth of the season, marking the most home runs by a Canisius player since Ryan Stekl (10), Liam Wilson (9) and Christ Conley (7) in 2018.
• The eight-run inning was the most scored by the Griffs since also plating eight against UMass Lowell last year on Feb. 15, 2020 in a 20-7 victory.
• The 12 walks drawn by the Griffs was the most since the team drew a program-record 13 also against UMass Lowell in that 20-7 win.
• Over the four-game weekend series, Chiarenza batted .556 with a double, a pair of home runs, driving in four runs, while also scoring six times. He posted an OPS of 2.066 in the quartet of games against the Jaspers.
