Game Recap: Baseball |

Baseball Sweeps Manhattan in Home Opening Series

After spending the previous 705 days and 33 games away from home, the Canisius baseball team took advantage of its return to the Demske Sports Complex on Saturday, posting a sweep of Manhattan with solid offense and pitching leading the way.

Canisius opened the home opening series with a 10-3 victory before taking the nightcap by a 7-2 margin.

The friendly confines of the Demske Sports Complex allowed the Griffs to bat .345 as a team and post a collective ERA of 2.81. Canisius' pitching also limited Manhattan to hit just .214 as a team.

GAME ONE RECAP
A pair of four-run innings helped Canisius take the opening game of the series, 10-3, over Manhattan.

The Griffs scored first in the opening inning with a sacrifice fly from Jacob Victor. Mike DeStefano later drove home Max Grant with an RBI single to take an early 2-0 lead.

Manhattan countered with a sacrifice fly in the second inning before a leadoff home run in the fifth tied the game.

Canisius' first four-run inning came in the fifth as Grant kickstarted the scoring for the Griffs with an RBI single, scoring Kyle Kush. Jacob Victor, the following batter, flied into his second sacrifice fly of the game that plated Max Felsenstein. Following a Manhattan pitching change, Gibson Krzeminski came off the bench for Canisius, singling home Grant. Vinny Chiarenza scored on a throwing error as the Jaspers attempted to catch Brennan Chisholm stealing second base, as he was pinch running for Krzeminski.

The runs did not stop there for the Blue and Gold as Jake Burlingame smashed a leadoff home run over the left-center field netting to begin the bottom half of the sixth. Following a fielder's choice, a steal and a walk, Chiarenza clobbered a three-run home run to dead-center field to extend the Griffs lead further.

Ryan Boyer started for Canisius, earning his first start and victory with the Griffs, after tossing five innings, allowing five hits and two runs. He walked one and struck out eight. Joe Barberio and Jarod Burmaster each pitched an inning of relief.

GAME TWO RECAP
Behind a career-high seven innings from Andrew Fron and a four-run sixth inning, Canisius was able to take the nightcap, 7-2.

Fron allowed three hits and one run during his longest collegiate outing, walking three batters and striking out six Jaspers. The junior retired the last 11 batters he faced, limiting to Manhattan batters to a .125 average against him.

Manhattan scored first off an RBI single by Will Trochiano, giving the Jaspers their first, and what ended up being their only lead of the day, before Canisius plated a pair of runs in the following half inning to regain the lead.

The first Griffs run scored on a fielding error that brought home Dylan Vincent. Mike Mazzara later scored due to a Manhattan wild pitch.

After a hiatus of runs, an onslaught of Canisius extra base-hits in the sixth led to a four-run inning for the Griffs. Gibson Krzeminski tripled home Vincent to kickstart four straight base knocks for the Blue and Gold. Mazzara doubled home Krzeminski to give Canisius a 4-1 lead. After a bunt single and steal by Jake Burlingame, Kyle Kush brought home Mazzara and Burlingame with an opposite field two-run double.

Krzeminski would add an insurance marker in the seventh inning, singling home Chiarenza.

In the ninth inning, Zahan Meyer hit an RBI single up the middle that scored Lewi Clarke for Manhattan to determine the final margin.

Head Coach Matt Mazurek's Postgame Comments
"Today was great to be back out on the Demske after so long. The Demske is a special place and our guys find a lot of comfort in our home. We got a couple of strong starts today and played solid defense and the bats were able to put up some crooked numbers for us. We did what we needed to do today and we need to catch our breath and be ready to come out swinging again tomorrow."

"Fron was the best he has been all year. We know what he is capable of each time he gets the ball and it's just a matter of him going out there and putting it all together. Today he was great."
