The Canisius men's soccer team will travel east on Interstate 90 to face fellow New York State rival Siena Thursday for a 3 p.m. kickoff at Hickey Field in Loudonville, N.Y.
 
Both teams are coming off losses in their season-opening matches last Thursday. Canisius suffered a 2-0 setback to Fairfield, while the Saints dropped their first game under head coach Graciano Brito, 1-0, to Rider.
 
SCOUTING THE GRIFFS
• Sophomores Ryan Dagelman, Noah Hodson and Federico Mereto recorded three shots on target for the Griffs in the loss to the Stags. Senior goalkeeper Tom Crosbie made the start in goal, making one save.
• Six Griffs made their collegiate debuts last week. Freshman Riley Wagner and sophomores Inder Thind and Ethan Grover started in their first game at the college level. Freshmen Luke Szablewski and Andrew Vannest, and sophomore Dayron Mejia Santos all made their debuts as reserve players.
• Canisius had 69.5 percent of its minutes played in 2019 come from their underclassmen (freshmen and sophomores). Eleven of its 12 freshmen that played in 2019 have returned for their sophomore campaign. So far through the team's only game this season, 60.3 percent of the team's minutes have been logged by either freshmen and sophomores.
 
SCOUTING SIENA
• Siena is coming off a 1-0 loss to Rider last Thursday in the first match under newly-minted head coach Graciano Brito.
• The Saints had eight players make their collegiate debuts last week in the season opener, including Bilal Hersi, who had a team-high two shot attempts. Antonio Linge, another player who was making his debut, had the Saints' lone shot on goal.
• Greg Monroe made his 14th consecutive appearance in goal for the Saints last week, recording five saves.
 
SERIES HISTORY
• Thursday's meeting marks the 33rd match between the two New York State schools. Siena leads the series over the Griffs, 18-11-3. The Saints have been strong at home against Canisius, logging a 10-3-2 mark.
• Canisius is winless in its last six matches with Siena (0-4-2). The Griffs have not defeated the Saints since 2013, a 2-1 home victory. The last time the Griffs bested Siena on their home turf was in 2006 in a 1-0 triumph.
 
UP NEXT
• Canisius returns home to face Marist next Thursday for a 1 p.m. kickoff at the Demske Sports Complex.
