Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Williams Nets Career-High 27, Leading Saint Peter’s Over Women’s Basketball

Graduate student Kendrea Williams scored a career-high 27 points —including the 2000th of her career — to pace Saint Peter's in a 65-55 victory over Canisius in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference women's basketball action Sunday at the Koessler Athletic Center.

Williams also added eight rebounds, three assists, and three steals to her stat line for the Peacocks (4-6, 2-0 MAAC). Sky Castro and Kassondra Brown both logged double-digit rebounding totals for the visitors as Castro grabbed a game-high 11 boards while as Brown pulled down 10 caroms,
tying her for the conference lead with five double-digit rebounding performances this season.

Canisius junior guard Shaunae Brown scored a team-high 13 points for the Griffs (2-8, 0-1 MAAC), while freshman guard Lydia Gattozzi chipped in with 12 points and sophomore guard Dani Haskell added 10.

GAME RECAP
Saint Peter's and Canisius were tied four times in the opening 10 minutes, but the Griffs went on a 6-0 spurt over 74 seconds late in the quarter to take a seven-point lead. Following a Saint Peter's layup with 1:34 left in the first quarter, both teams were held scoreless and Canisius enjoyed an 18-13 lead.

The late layup in the first quarter by Victoria Ikenasio kick-started a 19-4 run over nearly eight minutes for the Peacocks, who pulled in front of the Griffs, 30-22, with 3:47 left in the first half. Saint Peter's went 8-for-14 from the floor during the stretch while Canisius converted just two of its 14 shot attempts.

Canisius clawed back into the game before the break, closing out the remaining 2:44 of the quarter on a 9-4 run, highlighted by a running floater by Gattozzi at the buzzer to cut the Peacocks' lead to 34-31.

Saint Peter's went 8-for-12 from the floor in the third quarter, aiding the Peacocks to out-score Canisius, 20-10, in the quarter and have a 54-41 lead going into the final quarter of regulation.

The Griffs forced seven Saint Peter's turnovers in the final 10 minutes of game action and outscored Saint Peter's, 14-11, to close the contest.

Head Coach Sahar Nusseibeh's Postgame Comments
"We definitely struggled. From the second quarter on, I don't know what it was, but we are going to figure it out. Offensively, defensively, we took some steps back — especially defensively — just in simple fundamental principles. We got to figure it out.

"We have a team that fights. We're down but not out and that's been a theme. The next step for us to get better is let's not get down so that we don't have to fight back. Let's fight for 40 minutes and see where that leads us. It will lead to more success in terms of the win column. That's not the focus for us. The focus is getting better every day. We get better every day and the wins will come, no question. We have a team composed of some fighters, I think we didn't show that for 40 minutes today and I think that's where we got down on Saint Peter's. They're a little bit more established of a program, so hats off to them. We'll address some things tomorrow in terms of our prep for Manhattan and be ready to go Tuesday."
