The Canisius volleyball team scored its fourth consecutive win with a 3-1 MAAC victory over long-time rival Niagara at the Koessler Athletic Center Thursday night. The Golden Griffins (10-14, 10-5 MAAC) won the four-set contest by scores of 25-21, 25-14, 23-25, 25-16). Niagara fell to 11-13 overall and 8-7 in league play with the loss.

Fellow seniors Rachel Kinney and Camila Vazquez each added 12 kills to the winning cause, while senior setter Ashley Kekeisen was credited with 41 assists and a career-high 24 digs in the victory.

MATCH RECAP
Canisius jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the match after the Griffs posted a team hitting percentage of .244 in the opening two sets, while holding Niagara to a team attack percentage of .080. After taking the first set 25-21, Canisius scored the first six points of the second frame and never looked back. In the later stages of the second set, Canisius led 22-14 and went on to win by a score of 25-14 after scoring the final three points of the stanza – with two of those points coming off a kill by junior Ella Loussia and a service ace by Nelson on set-point.

Out of the intermission, the Griffs held a 13-8 lead over the Purple Eagles before Niagara ripped off six-straight points to knot the score at 13-13. Moments later, Niagara took its first and only lead of the match on the power of back-to-back kills by Jaycie Roberts. The Purple Eagles then extended the match to a fourth set when Canisius was charged with an attack error on set-point to give Niagara the 25-23 win.

Canisius made short-work of Niagara in the fourth set, as the Blue and Gold jumped out to a 9-0 lead, highlighted by three service aces by Nelson. Nelson's final two kills of the night propelled the home team to the 25-16 victory, allowing Canisius to close out the home portion of its 2021 schedule with a winning record at 6-5.

Nelson added 18 digs, five service aces and two block assists to her final stat line, as Canisius won its third-straight match over its long-time rival, dating back to last spring. Kinney recorded a double-double with her 12 kills and 11 digs, while also scoring three aces and two assists, while Loussia was good for nine kills, two aces and three digs. Junior Elle Shult chipped in four kills and a team-high four block assists, and junior libero Bree Long led the way defensively with 31 digs, her fourth career match with 30-plus digs to her credit.
