Volleyball Sees Winning Streak Snapped by Niagara

The Canisius volleyball team saw its four-match winning streak come to an end Tuesday as it fell to Battle of the Bridge rival Niagara, 3-1 (25-18, 25-18, 23-25, 25-21), in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action Tuesday at the Gallagher Center.
 
Jaycie Roberts recorded a match-high 17 kills while Mary Redl pitched in 14 for the Purple Eagles (12-13, 9-7 MAAC), who combined to post a .216 attack percentage (54-14-185) for the match. Roberts and Redl both recorded double-doubles as Roberts posted 20 digs while Redl added 13. Amanda Darling notched a team-best 33 digs and Jessica Streuer handed out a team-best 25 assists.  
 
Senior Camila Vazquez recorded a team-high 14 kills and a .333 hitting percentage (14-5-27) to pace the Golden Griffins (10-15, 10-6 MAAC), who hit just .135 (54-28-192) as a team for the match. Junior Elle Shult joined Vazquez in double figures with 12 kills while senior Ashley Kekeisen turned in a double-double with match highs of 40 assists and 34 digs.
 
Niagara held a slim 8-7 lead early in the first set before the Purple Eagles scored seven of the next eight points to build a 15-8 advantage. Canisius responded to the Niagara run with five straight points to pull within two, but the Purple Eagles regained control moments later as it pulled away from the Griffs to take the first set, 25-18.
 
Holding a 17-16 lead midway through the second set, a service error by the Griffs sparked a 7-1 run for the Purple Eagles that lasted through the end of the set to give Niagara a 25-18 victory and a 2-0 lead in the match.   
 
The third set saw Canisius race out to an early 7-1 lead before Niagara battled back to tie the set at 12-12. The Griffs responded with four of the next five points to pull back in front, 16-12, an advantage they would maintain the rest of the way as it extended the match with a 25-23 victory.
 
With the score tied at 4-4 early in the fourth set, Niagara took advantage of a service error to ignite a 7-1 spurt that gave the Purple Eagles an 11-5 edge. The Griffs answered right back with an 9-2 spurt of its own to take the lead, 14-13. The teams then proceeded to trade points until Niagara used a 6-2 run to build a four-point cushion as it held the lead the rest of the way, winning the fourth set, 25-21, to take the match.  
 
Game Notes
• Tuesday served as the 108th all-time meeting between Canisius and Niagara in volleyball. The Griffs lead the series 55-51-2.
• Vazquez recorded double-digit kills for the third straight contest and the seventh time this season with her 14-kill effort on Tuesday.
• Junior Bree Long posted double-digit digs for the 22nd time this season as she finished with 25. The 25 digs also marked the fourth straight match and 10th time this season she has tallied 20 or more digs in a match.
• Shult's 12 kills represented a season high for the Oconomowoc, Wis., product as she reached double figures in kills for the first time this season.
• With her 40 assists on Tuesday, Kekeisen surpassed the 1,000-assist plateau for her career.
• The 34 digs were also a career high for Kekeisen, shattering her previous personal best of 24 set last week against Niagara.

Canisius will close out the final weekend of the regular season Nov. 13-14 with a pair of MAAC road matches at Rider and Saint Peter's. The Griffs' will start their weekend road trip in New Jersey on Saturday against the Broncs, with game time set for noon from Alumni Gymnasium in Lawrenceville, N.J.
